"Sunflowers in My Studio II" Wins Honorable Mention

In the Art League's "Large Works" exhibit, "Sunflowers in My Studio II" earned an honorable mention. I was happy to hear it and plan to attend Thursday night's (tomorrow's) opening and awards reception to see both the "Large Works" and "Small Works" show. (The reception is at the Art League Gallery in the Torpedo Factory, 105 N. Union St., Alexandria, VA, on Thursday, November 8, 6:30 to 8:00pm.)

Today was day three of Studio Incamminati instructor Lea Wight's workshop being taught at the Great Falls School of Art. After a series of very short gestural poses, we moved on today to a long pose -- with a new model -- which will continue for the rest of the workshop.  Everything slowed down ... and I cheated a little with this post be cropping out the model's right hand -- one that had been plaguing me the entire afternoon. Right before leaving for home, I erased it. Tomorrow's another day.

"Figure Study: Day One": Closed grisaille

We've been working on 16" x 20" canvases and all poses/paintings are meant to cover the canvas as fully as possible while including the figure from head to toe. This is a great way to quickly learn proportions. At the same time, with a slender model and standing pose shown head to toe, she doesn't fill up too much of the width. (A 12" x 24" canvas would have been a better choice.) But, another part of the teaching is that this is about learning, not producing a great painting.

Because I've been through several of the Studio Incamminati programs in the past ... and spent the last nine years painting, learning is more incremental rather than done in huge leaps. At the same time, I'm constantly struggling with one thing or another. I'm going to spend the next two days trying to answer as many of those issues as possible -- by tapping the expertise of an exceptional painter and instructor.  I've actually been a lazy student -- not going into the workshop with a clear agenda. Time to change that!

"Merry Go Round" Finished!

I'm still in the studio ... and have to leave for home ... but wanted you to see this. "Merry Go Round" is finished. Just in time, too. Fruit flies have invaded the area. The produce guy at the Safeway where I bought a rotting nectarine's replacement told me that those were the last of those I was going to see for awhile. And, it's time to prepare my space for the Great Falls Studio Tour ... which means moving out my models. Lots of signs and incentives.

I love this painting.

Drawing Accepted into Art League Show

On Monday night, Randy and I brought two pieces to the Art League (in Alexandria) for this month's juried show. "Oscar," a charcoal drawing, is in the October exhibit which runs through November 7 in the Art League Gallery in the Torpedo Factory at 105 N. Union St., Alexandria, VA. "Cubanelle and Roses" is in the Bin Gallery for the month as well.

"Oscar" was juried into the Salmagundi Club's Annual Graphics and Photography Exhibit in 2009. The drawing was done during a modeling session held at the Artists' Atelier (my studio) and I was inspired. Live sittings do that to you. This drawing is very painterly, fresh and quick. That's who I was that day -- a painter with a stick of charcoal in my hand.

"A New York State of Mind" Wins Honorable Mention and Show's Up!

Phew!

Hanging my "100 Faces in 100 Days" exhibit was rough. More so for Randy ... but the two of us were a sorry lot last night leaving the Atelier to head home. I didn't end up with photos of Randy taking a nap because he was actively working for six hours straight. He's a very precise kind of guy. That comes in handy in his profession (he's a home builder) and hanging exhibits. Each face is carefully placed on its panel and each panel lines up its neighbors.

I need to tackle signage and other stuff -- I guess tonight -- and I'll have a show. And, I (desperately) need to spiff up my studio space with new work. It means a trip to the framer to get mats/frames for drawings and odd-sized work and matching work to frames for a delivery coming tomorrow for others.

I will be holding regular, extended open hours at the Artists' Atelier, 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, in Great Falls. Stop by Wednesday through Saturday, 12:30 to 6:00pm or by appointment. Note: I may not make it in on Wednesday, August 3. My computer is holding me captive. (Email me.)

"A New York State of Mind" Wins Honorable Mention

So Randy's braving entering my work in the Annual 'Scapes Show at the Art League was worth it. He said that yesterday was a zoo. "A New York State of Mind" is large - 40" x 30" plus frame ... and he had to carry it and another rather large, also heavy piece, two blocks for receiving.

The 'Scapes exhibit at the Art League is its most popular -- with visitors and Art League members. It runs from August 3 to September 5 in the Art League Gallery, 105 N. Union Street, Alexandria (in the Torpedo Factory). "A New York State of Mind" won an Honorable Mention from juror, Sarah Tanguy, independent curator and critic, as well as a curator for Art in Embassies (AIE), US Department of State, based in Washington, DC. An opening/awards reception is on Thursday, August 11, 6:30 to 8:00pm with awards presented at 7:30pm.

"Lunch at Jasmine's" Sketch Today

I spent almost all my day on art-related -- but not art-making -- stuff. I currently have an awful lot in my "to do" column and each of those tasks are major and important and terribly time-consuming. They relate to my 100 Faces in 100 Days project and include:

1. photographing each of the faces -- again -- for consistency and quality
2. promotion/press releases for my second local exhibit of those 100 Faces in August at the Artists' Atelier
3. writing a book on the project (to include those photographs)
4. research and contact other art venues, galleries, museums for the exhibit

I was working on #4 today -- and made some progress.

This means that today's "art of the day" is a little less thrilling. My husband, Randy, and I had lunch today at Jasmine Cafe at Lake Anne in Reston (VA) and he had to leave partway through lunch to take care of a favor for our son and daughter-in-law. That left me with some alone time inside ... with air conditioning ... to sketch those diners outside. (In my defense, these folks weren't modeling for me ... ) I would have preferred to using ink and pen&ink but figured that Eduardo, the chef/owner, wouldn't appreciate my risking a spill.

I do want to get there to paint -- on the Plaza -- but have a hard time tolerating the heat. Tough to pick a day to do that.

Joined the Art League Plein Air Painters

There was a new opportunity listed in the Art League's July Tidings Newsletter -- with a call for artists who would like to paint on the waterfront some Sunday's throughout the summer. Guess what? I signed up and plan to be there this coming Sunday morning with three or four other painters. It should be fun. I know my painting is bound to be entertaining. I'm looking forward to meeting the other painters in the group and being out in that great spot. And, I'm hoping for a cool breeze.

I've been away a few days. On Sunday -- I was painting, continuing on with my peaches and cantaloupe painting, and managed to make a total mess. I'll post it at some point ... if I can resurrect it.

I suppose that I didn't need to confess my difficult day ... but reality is, bad painting days strike sometimes. I did know enough to quit ... when it was clear there was no fixing it that day.

And Monday and Tuesday were dedicated to doing stuff to help celebrate my daughter's birthday. Lots of labor of loves.

And today, I took two paintings to the Art League (in the Torpedo Factory, Alexandria, VA) for receiving for this month's show. One was destined for the bin gallery wall: my painting, "Benched" painted during a workshop in Easton, MD awhile ago. And, I entered "Tranquility" for jurying. It was accepted ... so you can see both there until August 1.

It's always fun to go down to the Art League... and I miss being there on a regular basis. Lots of great friends, great people there around every corner.

This afternoon, I painted, returning to "Tomatoes and Onions" with lots of fresh, new paint. It needed strengthening ... adding more drama to the paint surface and lights/shadows. Plus, I rethought the relationship between the front tomato and onion below. Much better.

"Gourds and Turnip" Painting Yesterday and Today

Mainly I taught yesterday ... with a bit of painting in the afternoon working on this little one. Plus a little time today. My studiomate Elaine Elinsky brought in a beautiful centerpiece from her daughter Rachel's wedding this weekend.  She thought my Still Life class students or I might want to paint them. A wonderful treat. Those are the flowers peeking over the top of the gourd. (They hadn't arrived until after I started this piece ... so they are members of the supporting cast.)

I did want to take some photos in Tuesday's Still Life class... but I left my camera card plugged into the computer at home. One of the lessons was how to sign a painting. (Two were done with theirs.) I sign mine with the canvas on the floor as opposed to up on the easel ... so much easier for me. So there were some potential fun photo opportunities. Oh well.

Separate note. I entered the "Small Works" and "Large Works" shows at the Art League this month. No awards that I know of, but "Corner Seat" was juried into the "Small Works" show and "Arance, Oranges" was accepted in the "Large Works" show. You can see them both at 105 North Union Street, Alexandria, VA in the Art League gallery through the month of November.

I'll give you a break today. Not too much writing.

"Sweet Temptation Cupcakes" in the October Exhibit at the Art League

The theme for this month's exhibit at the Art League in "Interaction of Color." My painting "Sweet Temptations Cupcakes" was juried into the show.  The theme is right up my alley. I continually explore and experiment with color ... and know just how powerful a tool it is. It plays a major role in most of my paintings. Still, come receiving day for this month's show, I had few that I was comfortable taking away from my studio and other exhibit/show commitments.

See, I have the Great Falls Annual Studio Tour coming up in less than two weeks. On Saturday and Sunday, October 17 & 18, from 10am-5pm, hundreds of people visit the studios of 44 artist members of Great Falls Studios. I'm one of those 44. You will find me in the Artists' Atelier, 1144 Walker Road, Suites D&G, Great Falls. VA. In addition to filling up the galleries, salon style, from floor to ceiling, we will have bins of artwork, temporary screens of additional work. The space will be overflowing.  I want my work around me... to sell and show.

Two people have shown great interest in "Sweet Temptation Cupcakes". It was hard to submit it. What if those hundreds of people show up for Studio Tour and they all came to see that one. Unlikely. But, artists' minds seem to be wired differently.

Then, on October 19, I'll hang a new solo show in Maison du Vin's tasting room -- a  unique wine store in Great Falls. If I didn't need to plan for those two events, I might have paired "Sweet Temptation Cupcakes" with "Rooster Ruminations" as my Art League entries. Color was on my mind throughout "Rooster Ruminations" creation. It plays a critical role in its composition, and I believe that color is handled more deftly in it than in any of my other paintings. Well, at least it is in the top tier of color handling.

"Caffe Bar" and "Lemon Yellow" at the Art League

Two of my paintings, "Caffe Bar" and "Lemon Yellow" are on exhibit at the Art League in Alexandria (VA) for the month of September. It seems appropriate that "Caffe Bar" was juried in. It depicts a scene from last year's art historical trip to Venice that my husband and I took, led by Rob Liberace and arranged through the Art League. Randy and I dropped off my entries last night for the Art League's monthly show. This may be more than you want to know ... but each month as an Art League member you can submit two works, only one of which can be accepted. Receiving happens the first Monday night and Tuesday am of each month ... and it's a regular ritual for area artists. The Art League chooses a different juror each month (and in the DC area we have a wealth of capable jurors from the Smithsonian system, area art institutions, etc.) and that juror selects the pieces that will make up that month's show. Each month's juror also selects award winners. While "Caffe Bar" didn't win an award, I've won two Best of Shows and two Honorable Mentions in other exhibits there.

"Lemon Yellow" hangs in the bin gallery -- an area of the Art League gallery where artists who have been juried into three (of the Art League's) shows that past year can hang a small work. So I did.

Today was the first day of my painting class taught through the Great Falls Foundation for the Arts. I'll post some works in progress from my demo painting tomorrow. One of the most important lessons I try to teach is patience. Just as Rome wasn't built in a day, painting is clearly an acquired -- through hard work, time spent, canvases covered -- art. You can't rush it. You can work toward becoming a good, even great painter, one step at a time.

"The Writer" or "Erica II" Wins Honorable Mention at the Art League

I just got off the phone with Erica Fortwengler, the Communications Director and Solo Show Coordinator at the Art League -- and the subject of two, close to identical paintings I created. Erica sat for demos I gave two weekends in January at the Art League Solo Gallery where my "Place Settings" solo show was being exhibited. Anyway, the first painting went to Erica -- but I painted a second, twin painting from the first. The twin painting, "The Writer" was my submission for this month's all-media membership show at the Art League. Whew! It's hard to shorten this story.

So, Erica called me to tell me that WE were in the show. Plus, the painting won an honorable mention. Plus, during Erica's interview with the juror, the juror suddenly looked at Erica and the painting and said "that looks like you!" The juror for this month's show is Fritz Briggs, a teacher at the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore, MD.

Last month my "Orange Peeled" won Best of Show in the "Small Works" exhibit there. This month's Honorable Mention means I'll be going to the Awards Ceremony and Opening Reception a week from Thursday. See the Art League's web site for more info about this month's exhibit.

Receiving Bob Hof Award at the Art League

I had the pleasure of going to last Thursday's evening reception and award ceremony at the Art League ... and Randy snapped this photo of me receiving my certificate for winning the Bob Hof Award, Best in Show for "Orange Peeled" in the "Small Works" show this month. "Best of Show" - More Info

"Orange Peeled" won the Bob Hof Award for "Best of Show" in the "Small Works" Exhibit at the Art League (Alexandria, VA). That's number 1 out of 538 entries. The awards ceremony will be at the Art League on Thursday, November 13 around 7pm. The reception runs from 6:30 to 9:30pm.

Randy and I went back down to Alexandria today to take a photo of "Orange Peeled" and one of me. There will be a lettering added to the wall plus a tag with blue ribbon before the awards ceremony comes around. I'll show you that next week.

My name also appears in the December issue of Artist's Magazine -- as I was a finalist in their Annual Art Competition. Just a note: in 2005, I won my first Best of Show at the Art League and was a finalist in Artist's Magazine's Annual Art Competition for the first time. This year is my second time winning both of those honors.

My Mom's doing better -- out of the ICU and emailing me encouraging words. That's the best news.

"Best of Show" at the Art League

Last night, Randy and I trekked down to Alexandria, VA to the Torpedo Factory to enter this month's "Small Works" and "Large Works" shows at the Art League. Regular readers know that I torture myself over what to enter and where my various pieces should be. This evening, after teaching my portrait painting class in Great Falls I called the Art League to see whether or not my pieces got in. Rose O'Donnell, the Gallery Director who I know well ... and love ... answered the phone. She told me in her most nonchalant voice that no, sorry, #76 didn't get in. Oh, and #77, my second entry in the "Small Works" show won Best of Show!!!! I couldn't believe it! Really.

The award winner is "Orange Peeled", oil on Raymar panel, 8" x 6", $450. Contact the Art League if you are interested in purchasing. The juror for the Small Works show was Dr. Susan Frank, Assistant Curator at the Phillips Collection. Nice!

I last won Best of Show at the Art League in 2005 with "Alice with a Bad Case of Wanderlust." The Art League, with its 1000+ artist members is very competitive with a high caliber of art work in each of its monthly shows. This is an exciting honor indeed!

On a personal note, my Mom was operated on today to remove a parathyroid gland at NIH. The operation went smoothly with the outcome as expected according to my Dad. Tonight she moved into the ICU because of an irregular heartbeat ... so all the people who love her -- which probably is the whole world, and if it isn't, it should be ... will be anxiously awaiting news that all is completely well. I LOVE YOU MOM.
