"Alba Market" Painting in Progress

"Alba Market" work in progress, oil, 36"h x 48"w, ©Jill Banks 2014
On the day before my Paint with Me in Italy workshoppers left to head back home, I painted this fantastic farmers' market stand in Alba ... live and considerably smaller ... 12"h x 16"w, knowing that a larger version to come waited back at home.

And true to being in the midst of settling into a new home, neither Randy nor I could locate a 30" x 40" canvas. So, this is one of the largest paintings I've created, ever ... in progress and bound to be that way for awhile. It even takes a long time to tone a canvas this size.

Color Lessons and Duck Soup

"Not Picasso," oil, 24"h x 18"w, ©Jill Banks, private collection

"Apple Singer," oil, 16"h x 20"w, ©Jill Banks 2014, private collection
Shadyside was wonderful and exhausting ... with six paintings going to new homes, including:
"Apple Singer"
"Not Picasso"
"Delivery"
"Duck Soup"
"Breakfast Reflections"
"Hoot and Flowers"

(We started setting up the tent at 4am Saturday morning -- opened at 10am -- closed and unloaded around 7:30pm, opened and loaded in on Sunday around 7am, took down the tent and loaded the car at 7:30 or 8pm.  Long, challenging and invigorating days.)

Color Lessons
One of the purchases was touch and go -- with the collectors loving the painting but unsure about where it would work in their home given that the purple in it didn't fit with their color scheme. They decided on purchasing it, with the agreement that if it didn't work, I would gladly refund the money (or switch it out with another work if they wanted) as long as they contacted me before I left Pittsburgh for home the next day.

I did get a call Sunday evening -- from the collector -- that in fact, "Hoot and Flowers" worked not only in one, but many places. Later I found out that they moved around furniture, held up lamps upside down, tested it from room to room -- and loved it everywhere. The painting worked and enhanced every spot.  That's difficult to know when standing in the middle of a booth filled with nothing but art and none of your things.

The other reason for the phone call is that they wanted to also purchase "Duck Soup."  We delivered it -- saw my "kids" happy new home and how great they look in their new spots. Happy day!

There were many spots I wanted to paint in Shadyside and beyond -- once free to roam from Walnut Street. But, I couldn't take advantage of them this trip.  Tomorrow, you will find me at my easel -- somewhere in the DC area. No unpacking or other distractions until the painting is done.
I can't wait!

More Italian Statues ... in Torino, This Time

"Torino Bridge," oil, 12"h x 16"w, ©Jill Banks 2014
With only one day to explore/paint in Torino, Italy before bidding the country "arrivederci" for awhile ... I headed to the bridge we crossed entering the city for my subject. At each end, two statues either welcome or warn. The one closest to my view seemed poised to make a serious statement. More research to follow.

My painting spot was across the bridge Ponte Umberto I over the River Po in Torino, Italy.  Randy was on alert ... a few feet from me. Torino, from what I can tell in just a few short hours, is a beautiful Italian city ... but yet as an urban center, it didn't offer that feeling of safety and comfort of the Piemonte hill towns we'd just left behind. Nice to know that Randy was keeping watch.

An audience in Torino
It appears quite a few others were as well ... keeping me company as I worked.

Yesterday was a lazy, quiet day. I miss the laughter and good cheer of the workshop. Food will never be nearly as good -- and won't suddenly appear whenever I want it.

An amazing time comes to a close.  The great news is that every day life is pretty darn good, too -- despite the downgrade in scenery and edibles.

Homeward bound.

Last Day of the Paint with Me in Italy Workshop

"Alba Market," oil, 12"h x 16"w, ©Jill Banks 2014. Painted live in Alba, Italy's Saturday market
Before I rave about the beauty of Italy, kudos to trying to do anything on the Internet in the United States. I can feel myself aging just thinking about creating a blog post overseas. It is ... very ... very ... tough.

Tonight's dinner at Profumo di Vino in Treiso, Italy. We look pretty happy, yes?
Early tomorrow am, the nine truly beautiful individuals (plus Manu and Mary Beth and many more) who filled my life this last week head back home and onto other destinations.  Randy and I have a short bit of extra time here before flying back to finish our move into our new house. We will treasure every moment.

The Mayor of Treiso invited us to show our paintings in the chapel. This is half of them. More to come.
This morning, we headed to Alba -- for workshoppers to do as they pleased. Shop, sketch, watch me paint or check in from time to time. I was capturing the market ... live, in paint.

I will remember today.

I will remember being in the market, in a foreign land that becomes familiar -- mine -- because, through art, I choose to be a part of it. I get to take it home with me.

Dorry on her Great Italian Adventure ... on a Vespa with Manu
Francesco, one of my two subjects (along with his wife Anna Maria) in my market painting -- offered Randy and me slices of watermelon. Teased his wife (in Italian) that the painting just included him (as the star). Visitors wanted to buy it (it is not yet for sale as it will be the basis for a larger studio painting back home). It was A#1. Thumbs up. Bella!

According to Manu, two men who were looking at it from behind me while I painted were disturbed that my head was blocking their view.

Today is at the culmination of a week that to coin Christine's phrase is BETTER than a dream come true.

I hope, that with technology on my side, once home -- that more pictures worth a thousand words can be shared. Trying it here would wear me out.

So for now, friends, Ciao!

Painting, Lunch and Touring Roche Castelagmano in La Morra, Italy

"Time in La Morra," oil, 10"h x 8"w, ©Jill Banks 2014 features Anna and Dot as my models in the piazza at La Morra. Thank you! The former bench inhabitants had moved on
I just received an email from a fellow Great Falls Studios artist -- photographer Silvia Gonzalez-Roman -- with the message that she hopes that my Paint with Me in Italy workshop is as divine as I dreamed it would be. Yes.

And lots more.

While driving back from a very full, happy day in La Morra with Christine and Anne, two very enthusiastic workshoppers, Christine said she'd titled her journal for the trip "Better Than a Dream Come True." Totally agree!

Trina painting a balcony lined with geraniums in La Morra. Bella!
Through the guidance of Manu and Mary Beth Gaiarin, we're seeing and experiencing their Italy. Each of our guest hosts during the afternoons have graciously added their views -- passion for the land, their work, their love for this place and people.

We rose early to depart on the 45 minute trip to La Morra from Treiso -- to gain a whole morning of painting. Considering so many of the workshop students are beginners, it is amazing how easily they've adapted to discovering a place, and selecting from there what they most want to paint, setting up their easels, making their sketches, laying down the foundation and going to work. Each painting from the week is better than the one before. Their attitudes are fantastic. It would be difficult to feel otherwise, but they are thrilled to be here, sharing this once-in-a-lifetime experience (but we're -- Manu, Mary Beth, Randy and I are already planning to do this again next year). You're invited ... with the current attendees getting first dibs on 2015 slots.

The group in La Morra, Italy. (From left to right: Anne, Dorry, Mary Beth, Sarah, Claudia (the artist), Me, Joanne, Levena, Anna, Trina, Dot)
Lunch and tour of the winery was hosted by Alessandro Locatelli and his mother, artist Claudia Ferraresi. The winery,  Roche Costamagna has been producing Barolo wines in La Morra, Italy since 1841. Our lunch of authentic Piedmontese fare was eaten under the loggia with a spectacular view of the valley. (La Morra sits on the top of a steeply sloped hill.)

Part of me is always multi-tasking. Here we are in Italy, in the midst of a move stateside ... and thus appears the desk and chair that would make all non-easel work gloriously happy. I want this. Look for something inspired by it appearing in my townhouse someday soon.
Claudia Ferraresi introduced her art, landscapes that are a reflection of her love of the land. Her talk, interpreted by Manu was beautiful. She welcomed the art community. Welcomed the fact that we would be taking with us, through our art, a piece of the land she loves.

Levena at Roche Castelagmano
Hers was also a good reminder that art isn't about the technique. It's your heart and your impressions that make it art. Good words for those that are beginning -- learning the technique to represent what they see -- knowing that they are laying the foundation for later expression.
"Fortress and Flowers," oil, 10"h x 8"w, ©Jill Banks 2014: this morning's painting at La Morra, Italy.Photos from this whole trip have been off. I guess I need to read the manual. Or come back?

Paint With Me in Italy: Day 3 and 4

"Vino," oil, 16"h x 12"w, ©Jill Banks 2014
Yesterday and today, the group headed into the town of Treiso, Italy to paint in a little less cloistered environment before going on the road tomorrow. The town square consists of a church, chapel, some restaurants, a winery, the Mayor's offices.

Day 3 included painting, lunch at our B&B at Villa Incanto, taking a tour of the Lodali winery in town, guided by Walter Lodali -- and painting some more, if wanted.

Toward the end of the tour through the winery's stone wine cellar showroom, Walter turned off the majority of the lights and the focus was on one lone, large bottle on a gorgeous stone table under the glow of a chandelier surrounded by photos of the wine-making family.  Walter knew how great the room looked under this light ... and I knew that I needed to paint it. Permission granted ... and this is what I painted yesterday afternoon.  My only concern was that everyone would go home, forget I was there and I wouldn't be able to get out. Fortunately, that fear didn't make it to
Mary Beth coveting that stone table with Walter (left), Manu and Randy
fruition.

A tour here ... now that we've had one of the winery and a cooking demonstration ... is so much more. You realize how much passion is poured into food, wine, living. The grapes are so carefully tended, talked about. At the winery, we saw the history -- three generations of winemakers perfecting their craft.

At today's cooking demonstration, we saw the pasta we ate at lunch, made by hand after dining. An exacting process finely tuned to the weather/humidity. Not a recipe, but again, a craft honed by touch, smell, taste.

I'd write and post more... but it's time for bed as we head to La Morra tomorrow. A little ways away. As always a full day. An earlier start.

"Piemonte Lunch," oil, 12"h x 16"w, ©Jill Banks 2014 painted today in Nieve, Italy (near Alba in the Piemonte wine region)
My introduction to the Piemonte wine region of Italy continued today as we left La Morra, heading to our B&B for the next two days in Nieve. I'm glad Randy's driving (he's taken quite well to the Italian roads but we have yet to understand the signs and symbols). Roads wind around the hilltops with steep slopes, sharp curves, no guardrails, and views screaming for attention.  A precarious combination.

But beautiful.

We wound through Santa Maria, and Alba before reaching Nieve. The B&B is wonderful and room equipped with a private patio ... where I started this post.

Once checked in, we headed to the historic part of town for lunch (meat and cheeses, caprese, fresh pesto pasta) ... and then I set up my easel across the way looking back at Randy finishing up the meal. He was done sitting before I was done painting. The norm .... just Italian style.

I'm not sure exactly what tomorrow holds, but there's a good chance it will involve more exploring and more painting. Then the workshoppers arrive!

Oscar Haynes
Oscar Haynes
Our great friend Oscar passed away at age 98 yesterday. Oscar brought joy to every day, EVERY person he encountered. He already is so sorely missed here on Earth ... but the lights are shining even brighter in heaven, I bet.

I came to know Oscar through his wife, Joan, my parents' pastor.  We thought he'd be an ideal model for my portrait class ... and he agreed to sit for them. He was thrilled at being there ... almost as much as my class was to get to know Oscar and portray him. The downside was that no model for the class could ever hold a candle to Oscar.

To meet him IS to love him.

Oscar also posed for my 100 Faces project along with Joan. Those two days of sittings (one after another) were among my most memorable and special.  Joan and Oscar are two amazing, beautiful people who have taught me way more than a thing or two.

So many times when I posted a story here ... it would be answered with an email from Oscar with words of encouragement, excitement, cheer. He was always in my corner.

My life will be forever touched with Oscar's stories, joy, laughter, goodwill, love. My heart and prayers go out to Joan and Oscar's family and his world of friends.

Pinch Me in La Morra, Italy

"Bend in the Road" (La Morra, Italy), oil, 16"h x 7"w, copyright Jill Banks 2014
I must be dreaming.

In two days, my workshop "Paint with Me in Italy" begins ... when I'll be leading a very nice crew of students through an adventure in the Piemonte wine region of Italy. Yet, before they arrive ... I'm checking it out ... exploring the streets, osterias, pizzerias, views of La Morra yesterday and today. Heading to Nieve tomorrow.

This place is ridiculously gorgeous. I'd been warned. It's also the first time I've been someplace in Italy that wasn't packed with tourists. The views, the streets are filled with some visitors -- but mainly residents and some Italians on holiday. It feels like having been let in on a very nice secret.

Last night I ate pizza and sipped a local Barbera wine overlooking dusk and nightfall in the valley. A breathtaking view. One that made me count that lucky star.

Tonight, after dinner, we wandered to the main piazza I'd been painting a few hours before. It sparkled with small towns all through the valley set against an inky blue sky.

"Bend in the Road" was one of four paintings worked on today. Three will see the light of day. Not so sure about the fourth.  Another was completed yesterday too late for a photo to appear yet. I'll try to catch you up on this slice of heaven, feet and eyes willing.

Check out more of my paintings from this past Spring's trip to paths more frequently taken (Venice and Florence) in the Places Gallery on my web site: www.JillBanks.com, under Works.

At Home. "Duck Soup"

"Duck Soup," oil, 30"h x 24"w, ©Jill Banks 2014
Phew. Three weekends have been spent traveling to the Hamptons (Amagansett Fine Art Festival) and back, to Wickford Rhode Island (the Wickford Fine Art Festival) and back, and this past weekend -- Westport Connecticut (the Westport Fine Arts Festival) and back. Added to the travel were lots of fine conversations, connections, some paintings going to new homes, tent set-up, arranging paintings and packing them up again, dinners looking out at the water/harbor/river -- all thrown into the mix in the days away.

Before I left to head to Westport, "Duck Soup" was the painting on my easel. It was great to return to it today.

The scene is one I passed by over and over again this Spring in Florence, Italy. This street-side shop fascinated me -- with objects oddly combined -- being arranged but also tempting an avalanche.  I'll let this settle for a bit. It may be finished or maybe not. An objective look later will let me know.

We're moving soon.  The walls are getting more bare (thanks to Randy) and it's time to empty cupboards, desks, studio, sort.  Actually, past time, as the recent bustle has made this effort, well, late. Packers will come but there's much we'd prefer to handle ourselves. (I don't want to spend a month figuring out where the salt shaker is. Or lose a one-of-a-kind piece from my year sculpting.)

"The Dock Shop," oil, ©Jill Banks 2014 went to a new home via the Westport Fine Arts Festival
We'll soon be in a new neighborhood, a short distance away, where I'm looking forward to figuring out how to make this new home our own. There will be much I'll miss ... and yet I'm ready to enjoy the change! The boxes, packing, etc. ... in between stuff is but a hurdle.

Coming up very soon is ... Italy, Part 2 (in the wine region of Piemonte).  I don't know how reliable my Internet connection will be for the next few weeks -- with the move, B&Bs in Italy, travel, etc. but will try to keep you posted on the great adventure and workshop that awaits.

Westport, Connecticut "Heroes"

"Heroes," oil, 12"h x 16"w, Westport CT veterans memorial, ©Jill Banks 2014
If you receive my posts via email (as a subscriber), this message is one day delayed. This Saturday and Sunday, July 19 & 20, I'll be in Booth #85 in the Westport Fine Arts Festival in Westport, Connecticut.

Pre-setting up my tent, it was painting time on the  lawn of the Westport Historical Society, a park to honor World War Veterans. Heroes. So here's at least one of the paintings that will hanging under a tent this weekend. Wet paint warning.

I did need to pack up as a wedding rehearsal dinner would soon be taking place right behind this view.  Didn't want to crash the party.

Looks like gorgeous weather is ahead. The tent's ready for art.  Let's see.

Time in Wickford, Rhode Island

"Wickford Harbor (Logan's View)," oil, 12"h x 16"h, ©Jill Banks 2014, private collection
Since I'm a bit zonked from a full, exciting weekend (and life), here's again a quick post. My debut at the Wickford Fine Art Festival (its 52nd year) was a thrilling success. I LOVE it here!! Four folks have officially become new collectors of my work and I'd bet many, many more will at least be great enthusiasts. What an amazing weekend.

Wonderful visitors.

As a tradition to continue, on Friday, pre-tent setup I painted in Wickford Harbor. Painting, discovery, meeting you is what this is all about.

Among stiff competition, those hours were my favorites. "Wickford Harbor (Logan's View)" was one of the four paintings that headed to new homes with happy owners.  Pretty darn cool.

What an amazing place. Wonderful  people. Wonderful memories.  Great fellow artists. Thank you!

Westport Fine Arts Festival is next weekend. Can it hold a candle to this?

"Il Gatto II" and Wickford Bound

"Il Gatto II," cat from Venice, oil, 16"h x 20"w, ©Jill Banks 2014
This is the cat that greeted me as Randy and I wandered around searching for our hotel this April in Venice. (iPhone GPS does not work on those canalside paths.)

He/she was hunting and putting on quite a show.

"Tavern Shops," oil, 16"h x 20"w, ©Jill Banks 2014 painted during Paint the Shenandoah in Washington, VA

Speaking of shows, I'm heading off to Wickford, Rhode Island for the Wickford Arts Festival being held this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, July 12 (10am to 6pm) and July 13 (10am to 5pm).  In my previous travels, I've heard great things about this event and town.  Have any friends near? Tell them about it. My work and I can be found in Booth #85.

Time to finish packing and hit the road.

Day in Alexandria

"Shoreline," oil, 10"h x 8"w, ©Jill Banks 2014
Quick post. No time ... but I will be putting up a more substantial entry tomorrow. Check back at jillbanks.blogspot.com ... okay?

Two paintings.

Today's was painted in a park sort of near the Art League in Alexandria, VA. It was good for my soul as passersbys ... loved it. Commented. Loved my being there.

The photo is pretty awful ... but I hope you get the gist.

The Hamptons
I created two but one is framed and buried in the van that is still packed to head up to Wickford, Rhode Island for this weekend's upcoming show. The photo for this is worse than that for "Shoreline." Apologies. I am either painting or in the dark.

I met and talked to the folks who are ... sort of ... in my painting. They were enjoying ice cream before gaining more company ... before chatting with me. If I'm painting, I'm happy.

"Night in East Hampton," oil, 12"h x 16"w, ©Jill Banks 2014
That's it.

Saturday and Sunday: Sunny in Amagansett

The back wall of my booth at Amagansett -- temporarily before packing it back up again
But today (Friday, July 4) was rained ... (and winded) out. We set up a good portion of the tent bright and early, deciding on a much scaled back display, but packed it all back up again when it looked like the next opportunity to do so would be the late pm.

One of my neighbors taking a brief nap ... hoping for better weather
I'm assuming that no one came today -- but hope like heck lots of folks eager to enjoy this holiday weekend looking at some fantastic art.

I only got little glimpses of the work around me as most of us seal up the tents as they are being assembled to protect the art. There are only 30 artists in the show ... quality vs. quantity ... waiting to greet visitors:

Saturday, July 5, 10am to 6pm
Sunday, July 6, 10am to 5pm

15 Montauk Highway (at the American Legion), Amagansett, NY in the Hamptons. Free to the public. Free parking.

Despite an inauspicious start, we've been thoroughly enjoying this gorgeous spot. The nurseries are competing feverishly for the prettiest display. Houses are definitely New England beach, high contrast, white trim. Windmills. Fantastic seafood. Tons to do and see.

Looking forward to the rest of the weekend.

Alexandria King Street Art Festival

I'm extremely excited to be participating in the Alexandria King Street Art Festival this September. This is one of the top art festivals in the country -- rated by many artists as the favorite they do all year -- extremely competitive to be juried into AND in my home area.   Yea!!!! I hope you'll join me September 13 & 14 in Alexandria, VA for what promises to be an outstanding show.

Funny Life

As shown in the rained out pictures above and probably as an idea floating around in your head, taking one's art on the road has its unglamorous, bumps in the road side -- for sure. Still, as I look around me here in the Hamptons (if it hadn't poured, I wouldn't have had the chance to explore as much) -- there is confidence that those visiting this weekend will embrace my art as they have this spot. Just as I passed a house whose woodworking adorning its front porch made me say "Wow. Wow. Wow" -- those same words may also be uttered by someone stepping into my mini gallery under a tent. Then, I'll forget about the rain and when parts of the tent wouldn't come together ... and how I couldn't include any of my extra paintings in packing the van that is still filled to the gills.

Kickin' and Screamin'

-->
"The Inn," oil on linen-lined panel, 18"h x 24"w, ©Jill Banks 2014: painted on Friday, June 27 as part of the Paint the Shenandoah Plein Air Invitational sponsored by River City Arts in Sperryville, VA
Well, I wasn’t really (kickin' and screamin') – but husband Randy did have his hands full getting me to see the wisdom in putting our house on the market and embracing a move to a turnkey  (as in say bye, turn the key, and worry not) homestead.
My New Neighbor ... Photo taken through the window
I also wouldn’t have called that move full of wisdom if I wasn’t typing this in our ready to be inhabited, really terrific townhouse – just 20+ minutes away from our current gorgeous home. I’m thrilled about this new chapter. My new studio is unbelievably terrific, easy on the feet, huge and waiting for me to paint in it. Randy’s office-to-be is wonderful. Such a pretty room. Best of all, to me – is the townhouse feels just like all the other homes we've owned and loved before. All I have are great views of woods, long expanses of grass, beautiful light, plenty of parking. Privacy.
A house that feels like a home, already. There was even a rabbit welcoming me from our patio in the first few hours in the space.
So, that’s way cool. And, I'm as happy as can be.
Fantastic Home Studio Open House
Perhaps I should have started with that.  On Sunday, June 29 – we held a Home Studio Open House, Summer edition for the 45+ folks – collectors, current students, Paint with Me in Italy workshoppers, art enthusiasts – who were invited for one last look (and art-shopping opportunity) at my work hanging in the gorgeous Reston home not many people want me to leave.
Nine pieces were purchased (plus two more purchased and picked up) at the Open House. Everyone had a fantastic time. Workshoppers met their fellow adventurers.
I have plenty more to say ... lots of great news ... but will save some of it for this month's email newsletter which will hopefully be sent on its way to your mailboxes tomorrow. If you're not a subscriber (to the newsletter vs. my blog) -- I hope you sign up now at www.jillbanks.com. (I bet you'll love it.)
Tomorrow we're off to the Hamptons! At least part way ... to put up a tent full of art at the Amagansett Fine Art Festival open July 4, 5 & 6.  Can't wait!!!!!
