Shadyside ... A Rollercoaster Ride

"Porch Light On," oil, 16"h x 12"w, ©2016 Jill Banks
For each of the ten or so art festivals I participate in, the journey there, days exhibiting, road back are full of twists and turns.

Shadyside: the Art Festival on Walnut Street in Pittsburgh PA this weekend was the ultimate study in contrasts. I now truly see myself as the adventurer. Full of hope and anticipation going. Jubilant at times. Doubtful others. Saying "phew" or sighing, hour to hour.

I loved the trip there from Virginia. We traveled roads that seemed to hold mystery and beckoning everywhere. Ate at an amazing farm-to-table restaurant in Bedford, PA (Horn O Plenty) that makes almost everything they serve -- minus some items from local providers.

I love this show though when you visit three times there is a bit of "Groundhog Day" mixed in. Each day reminds you of a previous 24 hours. In good ways and odd ways.

On Saturday, one smart purchaser went home with "Back Story" -- a favorite of mine and she was so thrilled! It will go in her law office which was relocating and "Back Story" will lay the framework for art to come and define the new space.

There were many other potential connections, favored paintings, great interactions. We'll see what comes of it.

Randy and  I stayed at the Inn at Negley in Shadyside. What a welcome respite from many hard hours of work. "Porch Light On" was painted on Friday night, while enjoying some wine and cheese there ... but actually, mainly painting.  I thought of the Motel 6 ad -- we'll leave the light on for ya -- but that whole part of the experience was so almost other-worldly pampering-like.

Hail, winds, holding on at breakdown at Shadyside 2016. No fun.
On Sunday, breakdown begins at 5 with a thunderstorm at least two hours away ... only the thunderstorm did not get that memo.  The skies opened wide and formed a river down Walnut Street with booming thunder, lightning and Randy, me and a fellow artist holding the tent down in three corners for a LONG time. We were drenched. Paintings were safe. We survived. The Howard Alan Events crew were in it for the long haul to help artists safely depart -- many with some damaged art.

Crazy end. Nice drive home. My tent was spread out all over the car and railings to dry out today.  Good times and more challenging ones -- all in 72 hours.

"Evening By The Lake," oil, 12"h x 16"w, ©2016 Jill Banks -- painted 8/22/16
Gorgeous day with a few hours spent capturing fountain and folks at Lake Anne in Reston, Virginia. I plan on painting a large piece capturing some of the magic seen here recently. "Cantaloupes and Cow" New Still Life plus Fall Classes and Paint Great Falls

"Cantaloupes and Cow," oil, 20"h x 16"w, ©2016 Jill Banks
Hopefully, I'll quickly be packing in a bunch of info on this post.

"Cantaloupes and Cow" was what occupied my easel and windowsill at the Artists' Atelier today (756 Walker Road, Great Falls VA) during open hours and well beyond.  It took me about one-and-a-half-hours before finalizing the setup. I think there's some odd story lurking.

Great day. I enjoyed a diversion from landscape to still life. Loved the comraderie of several studiomates. Cool air conditioning and a really enjoyable late lunch break from painting with Randy where I soaked up some scenery that will be inspiration for at least one painting to come. Can't ask for more than that.

One from Long Beach Island NJ

"Water Watchers," oil, 16"h x 12"w, ©2016 Jill Banks
I'd mentioned that it would be awhile before posting any of my paintings created on Long Beach Island NJ for the Plein Air Plus painting competition that will culminate in an "Island Life" exhibition at the Long Beach Island Foundation. Well, despite lots of long hours painting on one of the Island's beaches, this one needed some help post-Plein Air and won't be one of my four submissions to the exhibition.  So -- I get to show it to you here. Yea!

I painted it on Thursday there. It was a balancing act -- hot weather, talking, painting and painting and painting.  The guard's umbrella has definitely seen better days. Multiple ice cream trucks made stops at the beach every five minutes (it seemed). The day was breezy. A challenge for my easel but a welcome reprieve from just heat.

My last painting created on this second trip of the Summer offered a happy surprise when pulled out  from my wet canvas carrier today. By the time I'd finished ... my eyes were worn out. I hoped it would be a keeper and thankfully it is.  Phew. I've got four paintings that will be happily submitted come September. "Water Watchers" will join three other extras to be rolled out on my blog and web site separate from "Island Life." Can't wait to show them to you.

"Seven Swans," oil, 30"h x 24"w, ©2016 Jill Banks
With the help of one ballerina and her mom, I also finally completed "Seven Swans." Really happy with that, too. Quite a day.

Late Afternoon at "Open Life"

"Open Life" work in progress, oil, 20"h x 16"w, ©2016 Jill Banks
Attending an orientation meeting for the MPAartfest in McLean VA today reminded me that it's a Saturday and -- lo and behold --I am free for the long pose open life.

Yea!

It's a work in progress because I'd like to work on some of the background elements and floor. No model needed for those.

Fun day. First Friday was great. You never know in a summer month in what sometimes seems like a ghost town. Thanks so much to all of you who visited! Please come again.

Featured Artist of the Month at FineArtVirginia.com

The August Home Page of www.FineArtVirginia.com features a close-up of my painting "Sun and Sea." Scroll down on the home page to access an article featuring my work in the Up Close section.  Only there for one month...

Can't tell you how excited I am about the write-up and images now up in the Up Close Featured Artist section of FineArtVirginia.com, the online home of the Fine Art Professionals of Northern Virginia group. Just two months ago, artist Jill Poyerd unveiled a newly designed web site including some new features like Hot New Art! and the Up Close section to spotlight one artist a month.  She asked in one of the many surveys of the group to launch the new site who would be interested in being featured. I said yes ... happily. It was a lot of work to put together the text -- on my Area of Expertise (what I'm known for), introduce myself and give a peek into my life as an artist. Really, not easy.

I'm curious what you think. Did I capture what differentiates my work from others? Any surprises?

The artists that make up this group are outstanding. So, enjoy exploring the whole site.

To see the Up Close section, go to www.fineartvirginia.com ... then scroll down to see Up Close, click on it and you'll go to the article or you can access it directly here.

Getting ready for this feature article also involved a learning curve. While having been a blogger for many years (8?), I've been reluctant to delve into other social media much. I couldn't even figure out how to send you to any of my pages.
