A New Use Found for Our Family Room: Booth Staging Ground

Today ... a whole lot of it ... was spent selecting paintings for my booth setup for Sunday's McLean Artfest. I'm positive that all those artists who travel the country doing art festivals have this down pat (or don't worry as much). It's hard to leave some home. I want to have some extras for when pieces do sell. Randy and I would both like to include drawings, too, but we'll have to find a different way to present those. I still have to do labels, signage, figure out what else I need to bring, etc.

These photos do not do it justice and there still will be some swapping out, but here's a sneak peek. My brainstorm of the day was to buy a second red rug (just one was too small). I'm rolling out the red carpet for you. Come take a walk on it this Sunday, October 2, 10am-5pm in the McLean Community Park at the corner of Dolley Madison Blvd. (Route 123) and Old Dominion Drive in McLean, VA. Stop by Booth #35.

Come Out for MPA Artfest on Sunday, October 2

My booth at MPA Artfest 2010
It's been a long day. I gave a talk this afternoon at the Rotary Club of Reston on my 100 Faces in 100 Days Project. (It went well.) I was preparing for it and gathering materials this morning. Then I tried to finish up my "Merry Go Round" painting so it could be framed and part of the tent at Artfest this weekend. I think I need to redirect my goal for that one to Studio Tour. There are lots of reasons ... but the one of the important ones is that dust and a slightly wet painting don't mix. Dust and outdoor art festivals do.

Tomorrow brings screen pickup for the weekend, figuring out just what I want to display for Artfest (a very difficult exercise -- I always want to show everything I'm excited about) and painting (with some of my studiomates) the gallery walls at the Artist's Atelier so it looks spiffy for Studio Tour.

I hope you can come to both events. They are two of my favorites of the year. See more info below. Check back here on Friday or Saturday for a preview of what will be in my booth on Sunday. (I'll let you know when I know.)

Last of the Beanie Baby Series

"Cuckoo Bird" Beanie Baby #9, oil, 6"x6", ©Jill Banks 2011
So I think this is a Cuckoo bird .. but I know it's Number 9 in my Beanie Baby Painting series. Last one. I may touch it up tomorrow a bit. For now, this is it.

I only had a short time to paint today, since my Still Life class was this morning and I needed to get my thoughts together for a talk I'm giving tomorrow at the Rotary Club of Reston about my 100 Faces in 100 Days Project. (Plus I needed to clean out a ... part ... of my car. It's been loaded to the gills forever. I should say ... I need to muck it out. It's that bad.)

I knew that all I could attempt is a little guy ... as much as I also wanted to finish my still life with the Carousel horse. It's pretty wonderful to be choosing between all of these things I'm dying to do. How can I go wrong?

Today's class was great today although I was missing a few of this very nice group. One of my still life students is a thirteen-year-old who signed up at the last minute. He's never painted in oils before and today was his second day in front of the canvas. His mom came to pick him up ... looked at  his painting ... and I believe, her jaw dropped. She told me that it's his first oil painting ... and I told her to keep that a secret. What's amazing to me, with him and my other students, is how carefully they listen and how hard they work to apply the lessons. To say it's rewarding is a HUGE understatement.

A couple of times I sat down on the window's ledge and look around the room. From that vantage point, I could really see the successes ... of Barbara's bottle and Cormac's pear ... or from another angle the three-dimensionality of Anne's leaves. At the easel, you don't always know what you've achieved. From across the room, those paintings are little miracles.

Another Day on "Merry Go Round"

"Merry Go Round" work in progress (Day 5), oil on linen, 30"h x 30"w, ©Jill Banks 2011
I'm not quite done with "Merry Go Round." Maybe there's a day or two more to go. But, tomorrow the week starts again ... and quite a week it will be. Monday is day three of my portrait class ... and we have a great model, studiomate Brenda Drake. After that, I finish taking down my 100 Faces in 100 Days exhibit. Tonight Randy and I brought half of it home. Tuesday is Still Life class. Wednesday I speak at the Rotary Club. Thursday we patch and paint the gallery and pick up screens for Artfest. Friday and Saturday will be consumed with figuring out how to set up my tent, packing, making labels, other prep, etc. And, Sunday's Artfest. There will be some painting ... other than the walls of the gallery ... thrown in there somewhere.

It's time to wash my brushes, relax and think about tomorrow. Sounds exciting, eh?

Roosters Painting Finished Today and Time in the Atelier

"Barn Dance," oil, 24"h x 20"w, ©Jill Banks 2011
This painting got finished and renamed today. "Barn Dance" used to be "Whatcha' Doing?" but thinking about my time with the roosters and hens at Kidwell Farm in Frying Pan Park. They careened around the pen ... sort of interacting ... and posturing.

One of my favorite parts of painting today was when I added in the blues to the tail feathers. I just loved the color but it also gave a good sense of iridescence. They are handsome critters.

"Barn Dance" is the first larger piece from my developing Feathered and Furry Friends series. Sooner or later, I'll get to many more. It will be in my tent for next Sunday's MPA McLean Artfest outdoor arts festival.

Time in the Atelier
I painted at the Artists' Atelier (1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls, VA) today for open hours. Laurie Bell, owner of Great Falls Tea Garden, was holding a tea tasting seminar in the gallery for a number of new visitors to our space. I painted while learning a good bit about Darjeeling tea.

Bobbie (Roberta) Beasley and Walt Lawrence, two of my studiomates, were in ...and after they were gone, Mollie Vardell came in to spend some time painting and also packing up for a week-long plein air painting adventure/paint-out. Walt helped Bobbie out with advice on framing and frame shops. Mollie talked about packing for her trip and we walked down together to her car so I could see how she organized her supplies for the trip. We'd talked about travel easels up in the studio and she set up her latest (and greatest) one for me to see in the parking lot. Before that, we talked about Vasari paint and her new box of colors.

One of the great parts of sharing studio space with other professional artists is that we learn from each other ... all the time, whether the topic is framing or products or techniques. Mollie and I are both tackling plein air painting and it's a whole new ballgame. It's nice to have someone else to lean on/swap ideas with/share what we discover. That's pretty great.

We have a kitten guest for the weekend, Misa, who accompanied son Sam and daughter-in-law Michelle up from Richmond. This isn't Misa, but Beanie Baby "Purr" closely resembles her. Now it's time to visit. There's one more Beanie Baby to paint to complete the series.

Back to the Carousel Horse Painting with a New Name

"Merry Go Round" work in progress, oil on linen, 30"h x 30"w, ©Jill Banks 2011
"Daisies and the Carousel Horse" has been renamed as "Merry Go Round." After two days of "other stuff," I was happily able to return to this painting with some replacement fruit and daisies. I worked at finishing up most of the fruit ... before my replacements need replacements. And, I worked a good bit on the carousel horse. This whole painting is filled with great subjects. It was tough to leave for the night.

Yesterday, I went "missing" from the blog ... as it was a "no painting" day. I was trying to fit it in, but it wasn't to be. Randy and I attended a fantastic pre-MPA Artfest fundraising party, a Soiree! last night and the entire afternoon was spent out shopping so I'd have something to wear. Shopping is not one of my strengths. Turns out I did okay, but it ate away a good chunk of hours.

I was amazed at the organization, attendance, enthusiasm, home, planning, etc. at the party. A huge crowd thoroughly enjoyed the event, fantastic setting and jazz music. I knew that a horde of volunteers worked to make the Artfest event successful for the community and participating artists. I didn't know how much the volunteers and McLean Project for the Arts staff do for the party as well. It's a year-round effort.

It made me look forward to filling my tent and enjoying the day at Artfest on Sunday, October 2, from 10am-5pm. I'll be in Booth #35 ... waiting to talk with you.

Tomorrow and Saturday, I'll be in the Artists' Atelier (1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls, VA 22066) for open hours from noon-4pm as the last chance to see my 100 Faces in 100 Days exhibit in the gallery there. Come visit!

Percolating Paintings

Well, I admit it. I wasn't painting today. Instead I was focused on taking care of some extra art business -- working on portrait commission prep work, varnishing a painting that's heading to Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club's Annual Exhibition that will be held at the National Arts Club in October, and just stuff.

Four to finish...
So, instead of new pictures ... I'm offering up some new thoughts. With three and a half months left in the year, I'm thinking about what's on my "to do" and "want to accomplish" lists. I have portrait commissions to accomplish and others to get going. There are paintings to finish (like "Whatcha' Doing?", my carousel horse still life,  "Cars and Coffee" and "London Times") and three more in the Beanie Baby series to create. I want to paint outdoors during this perfect season and as practice before Out & About Norfolk in October. Hopefully, I'll be able to practice painting outdoors and continue work on my Feathered and Furry Friends series. The good news is that not all of this has to happen at once. Some have deadlines, and I'll make those. Other deadlines are self-inflicted (there must be a better word than that) and I'll just see what I can do.

Another important priority is to work on my "100 Faces in 100 Days" book and investigate and pursue additional venues.

This means it's time to break back out my calendar and start dedicating days to these different tasks. For some reason, assigning days to projects has a settling effect and eliminates guilt. Each day I'll be doing what I'm "supposed" to be doing and I can feel just as good about taking my easel to the farm as spending time on the Internet looking into art spaces. And, I'll have some free days to use, with again, no guilt.

Percolating Paintings
All of those current projects haven't stopped me from thinking through some interesting concepts for what's next. I discussed this a bit in a grant application this week, at my demo for the Vienna Arts Society, and with a visitor on Saturday. When my 100 Faces volunteers came and sat for me they introduced me to different, special parts of their lives and experiences. Sometimes, those experiences or activities were shared by a few or many of my sitters, and it opened up "their world" to me, whether that was my dad's poker club or an African dance class or picnics and kid moments in many of the families I got to know. While I listened, I imagined these individuals as parts of the whole. I want to paint and share those experiences, mine and others, that we don't normally get to see or be a part of. My thought is to spend time in these different settings (my mom and dad playing cards at Iceberry's is one of them) sketching and painting on site over many (probably many many) sessions. These will be gradually developed, and I so hope they live up to the vision in my head.

"Daisies and the Carousel Horse" Continued and Open Life Today

"Daisies and the Carousel Horse" work in progress, 30"h x 30"w, ©Jill Banks 2011

This afternoon there was an Open Life modeling session at the Great Falls School of Art ... that, no surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed. The result is "Last Few Pages" below.

Randy and I went out to an early dinner so I could return to painting "Daisies and the Carousel Horse" tonight. I absolutely love painting it ... as in can't wait to get back to it. But, I bet when I'm done, I'll be a bit sad about that. I must admit that the fruit and daisies, in real life are looking pretty tired and bruised and suspect.

"Last Few Pages," 20"h x 16"w, oil, ©Jill Banks 2011
Part of why I'm enjoying painting this one is the scale of both the still life setup and my canvas. The dimensions are 30"h x 30"w, so pretty big and the objects are all painted about life sized. That's freeing. And I'm racing to capture what's there before it turns to mush. That's freeing, too.

Okay, and in between posting with no photos and getting these added, I received a comment from Joan Bell-Haynes (Face #12). You've got to read it, too.

"Alan" Accepted into the 83rd Grand National Exhibition

"Alan," oil, 30"h x 24"w, ©Jill Banks 2005
Good news! Today's mail delivered one of those self-addressed stamped envelopes that I send out with my responses to Call for Entries. In it was a letter with big type: Congratulations! My entry "Alan" has been accepted into the 2011 American Artists Professional League Grand National Exhibition. The show will hang in the Salmagundi Club, 47 Fifth Avenue, NYC from Tuesday, November 1 through Friday, November 11. The exhibit is open to the public on those dates from 1pm to 6pm with a reception, awards presentation and annual meeting on Sunday, November 6, 2:00 to 5:00pm.

"Alan" has already had a good history. This painting was a finalist in Artist's Magazine's Annual Art Competition in the portrait category. And, "Alan" was on the cover of élan Magazine in May 2006.  I felt like a star! (And so did Alan!)

It's tough to choose the right piece to submit to an exhibit, and for that matter, the right exhibits for me. I have to either go see the exhibit in person or take a good look at it online, if possible. This is my second time being accepted into the Grand National, and I attended the reception for it when my piece "Sunflowers II" was part of the exhibit in 2009. Accepted entries are traditional realism only. So, I work to figure out the right fit. Actually, I agonize over it. Perhaps I think this helps my chances.

Fun Time at the Demo Last Night
I painted a very quick demo last night following the meeting at the Vienna Arts Society's Art Center. This is an awfully good group of people who sponsor an annual Treasury of Art show each year in November. (Last year, I'd won 3rd Place with my three-color chalk drawing of "Becky.")

I painted a little -- a simple still life -- and talked a lot about my 100 Faces project in between discussing not using mediums, working on boards vs. canvas, the thickness of the paint, etc. It's rare for me to paint for just an hour (or less). That's when I'm just getting started, usually. But, I think it's important to get over having to do something we're not used to -- and find a way to adjust or just adopt the right attitude. That can be as simple as changing your expectations. As in ... lightening up ... and delivering information, an approach and hopefully, some inspiration.

I also feel honored by the invitation. Thanks, Anita Champ for including me in the program!

I'll check out the photos Randy took last night ... and perhaps post them later today.

Come see soon.
Open Hours at the Atelier and Last Chances -- 100 Faces in 100 Days
My 100 Faces in 100 Days paintings are all up at the Artists' Atelier (1144 Walker Road, Great Falls, VA 22066) for just one more week. I'll take them down on Saturday, September 24. Open hours are Fridays and Saturdays, noon to 4pm or contact me by email for another time. The exhibit carried over for extra weeks into September ... but this is it! Later I will work on finding other places to exhibit them as a group ... but who knows where that will be. Or when.

"Pear and Roses" Demo Painting

"Pear and Roses," 20"h x 16"w, oil on panel, ©Jill Banks 2011
I can't say that here's the demo from today's Still Life class ... but I started it then.

Quite a few hours more working away, and this is the result.

Today, I remember how tiring getting back to classes can be. I think I could have set up about six still lifes with all I ... and my dad ... and Barbara Marhoefer toted in. Barbara brought in jewels from the Eastern shore that called to me from one corner. My dad brought a gorgeous plant that I paired with one of my oranges that I set up on the right. On the floor behind me was an overflowing basket with a combination of stuff from all of us ... that was gorgeous. That's sort of a sign of things to come.

Both my Still Life and Portrait class are full  ... with really great people. What a difference that makes to the experience as a teacher and as a student. Art and angst don't mix. Art, humor and goodwill ... do. I can't wait to see all of them at their easels next week.

Class today ... "Hi, Mary Beth!"
Mary Beth ... we all miss you!

"The Audition" Painting Demo for Portrait Class

"The Audition," oil, 20"h x 16"w, ©Jill Banks 2011
Today was the first day of my Portrait Painting and Drawing class for the Fall Term. I regularly do a demo for the day one of class, as this is the best way I know to show how to develop a painting throughout the session. Zeki was our model. One of the hardest thing to do as a model is to hold a natural, consistent expression. It's easy as time goes on "to sink." Zeki didn't and looked just as alive for the first half hour to the last.

I've got a great group in the class and while many have been students of mine for awhile, they haven't all been in class with each other before. So they had the treat of meeting one another.

I'd taken the Summer off this year from teaching classes ... so today definitely felt like Back to School time. Tomorrow's my first day of Still Life class. Time to get ready.

"Daisies and the Carousel Horse" Painting Start Today

"Daisies and the Carousel Horse" work in progress, oil on linen, 30"h x 30"w, ©Jill Banks 2011
The name will likely change, but this is my painting start of a setup my dad brought to my studio today. I've got places to go ... so this will be a short post ... but I have lots of photos of this in progress that I hope to add here later.

I'm loving this painting and setup, but by painting late tonight, the lighting became much more dramatic. That means I've turned it into a painting I'll want to work on at night only ... or I have to figure out how to close out all of the daytime light in the studio around it.

Classes Start Next Week

"Clown Girl and Kisses" Finished

"Clown Girl and Kisses," oil, 20"h x 16"w, ©Jill Banks 2011
This wasn't easy. Now, though, when something is challenging, I remember facing the same, or at least a similar problem in paintings past.

Challenge #1: Sparkly things. Like the doll's interesting metallic material feet. And those kisses. In general, there were a LOT of different textures here. Each to be painted uniquely. To achieve the sparkle, I recalled working on my bellydancer paintings. See one of those below.

Challenge #2: An unusual palette for me. When you're reaching for a new color, one you're unaccustomed to mixing ... there's more guessing and trial and error. Those color charts that are part of the painting helped. A lot!

With many major art events right around the corner, it's time for me to concentrate on getting work, portfolio, web site,  inventory/records, mailing lists and marketing materials ready for prime time. That should be interesting. When I think about setting up a booth (at MPA McLean Artfest on Sunday, October 2, 10am-5pm) in just a few weeks, it's a little daunting, but that event makes for one of the best days of the year. Something I'm looking forward to.

"Lemons and Black Figs" Painting Today

"Lemons and Black Figs," oil, 10"h x 8"w, ©Jill Banks 2011
"Lemons and Black Figs" was going to be my second "practice" for tonight's demo. Since that demo was canceled, (probably postponed until next week, hopefully on a drier day) it turned into my painting of the day. I'd gone to Trader Joe's to pick up lunch and painting objects, intent on finding fruit or veggies with a distinct shape ... versus distinctly round onions. Thus ... lemons and figs ... chosen too for their complementary colors. I bought the funkiest shaped lemons I could get, and then painted this view of them ... where you can't tell just how strange they are. Perhaps they'll appear again, more obviously bumpy.

All day it was hard to ignore the rain. I painted in the classroom instead of the Atelier ... since my "Clown Doll and Kisses" is taking up the room I have for a still life setup. She wasn't ready to move. I was painting next to a big picture window and the rain poured ... as hard as it possibly could ... all afternoon long.

I've done many (as in lots!) of painting of lemons. Check out some in the still life section of my site's gallery page. This, however, marks the first time painting figs. I can't wait to do more!
