"Bar at the Old Brogue" Painting, Day Two

"Bar at the Brogue" Day Two in progress, oil, 18"h x 24"w, ©Jill Banks 2012
This is a delayed post ... a reprieve from writing about today's technologically troubled painting session. That's my penance for an incredibly great painting day yesterday. (I was working on a family portrait and all went very well ... all day long. I love it! Actually, can't stop staring at it.)

So, this is the "Bar at the Old Brogue" after a second day of painting on site last week, with more work done that evening from photo references. The bartender changed ... as they did in real life between day one and day two. I've added in some figures ... and contemplating putting in more. There will be other changes as well.

Starting on it and working on site from life meant I didn't know what would happen, who would come and go. That's tough on composition, but great for giving it a real sense of life. Resolving the composition, so your eye travels throughout the painting in an interesting way is why I'll make some changes to the figures that are there ... and perhaps add more.

One of the fun additions on day two was the barrel that moved from next to my easel to in front of the bar. Fun to paint!
