Great Falls Studios Exhibit at Life with Cancer

I'm one of 19 Great Falls Studios artists exhibiting at the Life with Cancer Center at 8411 Pennell Street, Fairfax, VA 22031. The exhibit runs through December 31 and 20% of proceeds of the sale of art benefits Life with Cancer. There's a reception this coming Wednesday, November 10, 7-9pm.

A bit about Life with Cancer's Center:

Life with Cancer’s Dewberry Family Center, also known as “Carolyn’s House”,  is a free-standing resource center for cancer patients and their families. The new 16,000-square-foot facility combines the comforts of home with a place for cancer education and support of cancer patients and survivors at no additional cost. It is the only health system affiliated resource center of its kind in the Northern Virginia region.

The Family Center features a cancer information center, comfortable classrooms,  private and group counseling rooms, children’s and adult art therapy studios, a large exercise room for classes specifically designed for cancer patients, a teen lounge, a reflection garden with a waterfall, and a large dine-in kitchen for healthy eating cooking demonstrations.

Partially funded by the generosity of patients, survivors and community members, the Family Center offers a variety of education and support programs for anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis.

My pieces being exhibited include (from top to bottom): "Sunflowers II", "Sweet Temptation Cupcakes", and "Il Gatto".

"Sunflowers II", oil on linen, 30"h x 30"w, copyright Jill Banks 2008.
"Sweet Temptation Cupcakes", oil, 12"h x 12"w, copyright Jill Banks 2008.
"Il Gatto", oil, 16"h x 12"w (I think), copyright Jill Banks 2010.

Two New Exhibits: "Still Life Poetry" and "Food"

I'm losing track of days here ... probably for good reason. On Friday, I helped Walt Lawrence and Cindy Grisdela (and Linda Rosen) hang a new Great Falls Studios exhibit "Food" at Katie's Coffee, part of the Old Brogue Irish Pub. My contribution was "Lemon Yellow" (see my July 28 post). The exhibit contains 23 pieces, all less than 154 square inches and fitting the broad theme of "Food." Lemons work. The show hangs for the month of August.

On Saturday, I worked more on "Reflections". I'll return to that piece later on today while I scheme about the new still life setups for class tomorrow. Hmmm.

Yesterday, I took four pieces to ArtSpace Herndon for the "Still Life Poetry" invitational exhibit. I can't wait to see that show hung. I think it will be phenomenal -- nice space, great art, great group of artists. What you'll see there of mine:

"Peonies"
20"h x 16"w
oil on linen
$1500

"Sunday Morning"
12"h x 12"w
oil
$1050
This painting was juried into Salon International 2009, a project of the International Museum of Contemporary Masters, held at Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio, Texas. Also appeared in the April 2009 issue of "American Art Collector".

And, the littlest:
"Peppermint Stick and Pencil"
6"h x 4"w
oil
$195
This one's fun and a good painting to boot.

Also, my "On the Bright Side" solo show of 22 paintings and drawings continues at the Great Falls Library, 9830 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls until the end of August. Don't miss it!!! New Great Falls Studios Art Show at the Conscious Bean

Great Falls Studios members hung a new exhibit at the Conscious Bean, a coffee shop across the street from the Artists' Atelier (the studio space I share with 15 other artists) and new home for the Great Falls School of Art. Jennifer Duncan, fellow studiomate and friend, curated the show of coffee shop interior and exterior scenes created by artists who belong to Great Falls Studios, a membership organization of 84 creative souls who live or work in Great Falls. There are 20 pieces on view. Works are available for sale and include sculpture, a mixed media diorama, paintings in watercolor, oils, and acrylics, photography and digital art. It's a great representation of a very diverse group.

My painting "Caffe Bar", depicting a coffee shop in Venice, is my contribution to the exhibit.

Many of the exhibitors will be participating in this coming weekend's Spring Art Festival held in two locations on Saturday and Sunday, 10am-5pm. I'm one of them ... and I'll be moving between my two studios at 1144 Walker Road, Suites D & G, Great Falls, VA. You can see the Conscious Bean exhibit, 20 artist exhibitors at the Colvin Run Historic Schoolhouse and 10 exhibitors at the Artists' Atelier, upstairs and downstairs, Suites D & G.

The exhibit will be up for three months. The Conscious Bean, 10123 Colvin Run Rd.
Great Falls, VA 22066. (703) 757-2326. See my blog post on the first exhibit "The Coffe Mug Exhibit" here.

The Great Falls Studios "Fresh Perspectives" Show

I'm thinking that this is the last show I'll be hanging for Great Falls Studios in my position as Exhibit Chair (actually co-Exhibit Chair with Walt Lawrence) -- so its being given a little more fanfare. Here is part of it in pictures. Please go visit it in person if you can -- that's much better! Sales are made by contacting the individual artists. Part of the proceeds are donated to Friends of the Great Falls Library. I always think the last show's the best. I think that about this one.

My entries are "Deli Italiano," a nocturne, and "Mom" -- a quick oil sketch I did of Mom when she sat for a session during the portrait class I teach through Great Falls Studios. More on those two in another post -- but see top photo, this post. For now, here are some photos taken of the show today.

The "Fresh Perspectives" show may be seen at the Great Falls Library, 9830 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, VA 22066. (703) 757-8560. Open Monday to Thursday, 10am-9pm; Friday 10am-6pm; Saturday 10am-5pm. The exhibit ends December 31.
