Right After "I Do"

This has been in the works ... but hush, hush until yesterday.  I was commissioned to paint at a wedding reception ... with the final painting to be a wedding gift to the newly wedded couple from the bride's parents.

"Wedding Reception" oil sketch work in progress, 18"h x 24"w, copyright Jill Banks 2013
I loved the venue -- a vineyard less than an hour away with beautiful vistas all around. Some of the logistics  were daunting. Short timeframe (about an hour and half between the ceremony and guests moving inside). Lots of moving people. Still setting the scene.

Although I'd never been commissioned to do something like this, I also knew my qualifications were about as well matched to the task as they could be.  I like interaction with others -- while painting -- a skill acquired through teaching and observing great instructors. I've had plenty of practice with in motion individuals -- 100 of them -- while painting my 100 faces in 100 days. I've been working on my plein air and speed painting skills. Think Mountain Maryland Plein Air, Wayne Plein Air, Fast and Fresh with Richmond Plein Air, Easels and Frederick Quick Draw.

I'm really pleased with the sketch created during the one and a half hour window last evening. It will get so much better when I can focus and think.  The bride and groom are missing ... since they were being captured photographically during most of the cocktail hour. Guests were so enthusiastic. Loved the idea and the painting. It was funny, because I think they had to use a lot of imagination to see it the way it will be.  It must have been a good crowd.

This will be developed over weeks. I'll let the first pass dry so that none of the energy, in the moment sense of this will be lost.

"Serendipity" New Solo Exhibit Is Up!

"Ballerinas II," oil, 12"h x 16"w, ©Jill Banks 2013. The photo is a casualty of too much last minute details. I photographed it once hung in the show -- in its frame -- after painting on it (once again) last night. Phew.
Hard as it is for me to believe, considering all the last minute scrambling involved -- "Serendipity," my exhibit of 27 original oils -- about 19 of which were so recently completed -- is up at the Great Falls Library, 9830 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, VA. Wall tags -- the stories that go along with each painting will go up either tomorrow or Monday. But, the library's open tomorrow (Saturday, June 29), so stop by if you can.
"Serendipity" Exhibit: Wall 1. Kind of a tour of where I've been lately.

You're invited to come by any time between now and August 31 -- provided the library is open.
Reception: Saturday, July 20, 1-4pm
Painting Demonstration: Saturday, August 10, 1-4pm when I hope to be painting ballerinas in tutus. Want to come to that? Please RSVP to me via email so I can save you a spot.  Know a ballerina or two who would like to be subjects? I'd love to have them model for me -- during the demo or another time.
"Serendipity" Exhibit. Walls 2 & 3.
Here are some slightly blurry photos of most of the exhibit.  I noticed, too, that each photo needed to be rotated a few degrees left. Do I always lean?
Woof.

I sent out my email newsletter to subscribers mid-afternoon today. If you didn't get "News From The Easel: Plein Air and "Serendipity" in your email mailbox -- you can read the archived version on my website. Like it? It's easy to subscribe right on that or any other web site page.

That's enough for today. Let me know if you'd like a personal tour of the exhibit. I'd love to meet you there!

"Horsepower" Officially Finished

"Horsepower," oil, 30"h x 24"w, ©Jill Banks 2013
And my exhibit postcards are in! Wow! They look terrific. Modern Postcard printed them and I think this batch is the very best.

Assuming I make it through the next three or four intense days, they will be heading to some of your mailboxes.  If you'd like to make sure you get one, please email me your snail mail address.

Today I went over to the Great Falls Library to measure the walls.  Even with just two days to go, I'm struggling with which pieces to hang. As difficult as it is to pack everything up, it would be most helpful to have a solid idea of what would fit, look best, make the most interesting exhibit.  Perhaps gazing into a crystal ball will help.

"Horsepower," hopefully, will be part of the exhibit.  I'll let you know on Friday night the official list.

My solo show, "Serendipity," will be on exhibit at the Great Falls Library, 9830 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, VA from July 1 to August 31. The opening reception is Saturday, July 20, 1 to 4pm.

You can see more paintings of animals on my website: www.JillBanks.com ... click on works and go to the Animal collection.

"Hudson River Morn" Finally Finished

"Hudson River Morn," oil, 40"h x 30"w, ©Jill Banks 2013
"Hudson River Morn" is the "papa bear" version of a painting created looking out the floor-to-ceiling window of my NYC hotel room March 2012.  It was in what I thought to be almost-finished state several times but given the marathon painting work done today -- it seems I thought wrong.

Last year, I took advantage of the fantastic views in two directions from that glass shower. I painted in there for three days -- sunrise to sunset.  The wee morning hours were spent enjoying the view of the Hudson with the city awakening.  In the afternoon, I turned 90ยบ and painted "Sunset in NYC" (a favorite purchased last year).

"Hudson River Morn" is one more painting to be included in my "Serendipity" exhibit. See info below and on my web site: www.JillBanks.com (under events). I've started to build a preview of work that most likely be in that exhibit. Go to the web site, click on works and then the Serendipity exhibit. More to come.

Painting, Painting, Painting

"Cafe Bords du Seine," oil, 12"h x 8"w, ©Jill Banks 2013
It's a race to get ready to hang my new exhibit "Serendipity" on Friday.  Today was filled with lots of painting hours, plus some list making and playing with the exhibit layout/painting choices on the computer. My goal is to put the finishing touches (actually much more than that on some) on more paintings than I'm willing to admit at the moment.

One of the pieces I worked on today, "Cafe Bords du Seine" was painted on the sunniest and warmest day during our March/April trip to Paris ... right on the spot.  I wanted to add a little more definition to the characters who changed and moved while painting live.

You can take a look at it and other Parisian scenes (plus lots more) at the Great Falls Library (9830 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, VA) from July 1 to August 31.

Speed Painting: Reston Town Center and Frederick, Maryland

Long post ahead.

The last three days have been sort of a whirlwind.

Painting at the Town Center
On Thursday, I headed with my easel back to the Reston Town Center -- hoping to finalize two paintings in progress that are possibilities for my solo show "Serendipity" that we'll be hanging in less than a week.  (There will definitely be some very fresh paint in the exhibit.)

"M&S Grill," oil, 16"h x 20"w, ©Jill Banks 2013
After working on a portrait commission in the morning, the first part of the afternoon was spent eating lunch with husband Randy at M&S Grill at the Reston Town Center (Reston, VA) before painting it from across the street. It was a gorgeous day, not too hot, with lots of enjoyable painting time and great conversations with visitors. Since lunch came first, I was worried that the chairs on the patio would be mainly empty but there remained a steady stream of paintable subjects staying seated for a decent spell. Still, they are moving -- not modeling for me. It was challenging, but not as much as tackling the next painting of the day.

Standing at your easel -- outside on the pavement requires a break. So, after packing "M&S Grill" back in my car -- before loading up with the next painting setup -- I grabbed an iced tea from Panera and sat in front of the Pavilion where a crew were preparing for a private party. It looked intriguing.

An opportunity knocked me over the head.

"Party Time," oil, 12"h x 16"w, ©Jill Banks 2013
I just happened to choose Thursday as my day to paint at the Reston Town Center. It's been months since my last outing.  And, luck/serendipity put a party a few yards from where I'd been painting that afternoon.

I'm in training to paint large groups -- in motion, in real time. But, how many opportunities do you get?

While the result is as much a blur as the party -- I'm relieved to have tackled it, gotten over some jitters, stood with easel amidst a crowd doing something so ridiculously challenging -- and survived.

Quick Draw: Easels in Frederick
In a last minute decision, Randy and I decided to go to Frederick, Maryland so I could participate in this morning's Quick Draw painting competition. We'd passed through and lunched in this great town on our way back from the Mountain Maryland Plein Air competition two weeks ago in Cumberland, MD. It was just the kind of place that begs to be be captured in paint.

"Ice Cold Lemonade," oil, 12"h x 16"w, ©Jill Banks 2013
We stayed at a wonderful bed & breakfast, 10 Clarke Place in Frederick, MD last night. Monique, the owner fixed a ridiculously great breakfast (smoothie, waffles, frittata) to get me ready for the big day. The horn blew at 9:30am for us to start and then again at 11:30 to tell us to put our brushes down.

"Ice Cold Lemonade" was the result. These two hours flew. At the one hour mark, there was so much left to do. Still, the painting seemed to strike a chord. I thought the colors and aura of this shop were so great. Fun subject.

Those are Randy's fingers ready to take the framed painting for viewing at the Wet Paint Exhibition for Easels in Frederick. Phew. What a day.

Paris Painting: "Cafe Break" in Progress

"Cafe Break" work in progress, oil, 24"h x 30"w, ©Jill Banks 2013

Sorry for the frequent absences.  In a little over a week, I'll be hanging my solo show "Serendipity" at the Great Falls Library ... and there seem to be a million ducks to get in a row before that.

"Cafe Break" may be one of the many paintings of Parisian and more local streets, people, animals and places that will be on exhibit for July and August. The opening reception is Saturday, July 20, 1-4pm at the Great Falls Library, 9830 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, VA 22066.

I will be sending out an email newsletter in the next day or so ... full of news.  If you haven't subscribed to that on my web site, please do at www.jillbanks.com.  Postcards just were ordered as well. If you'd like to also join my snail mail list, send me an email with your address.

Thanks!

"Fast and Fresh" Paintout on Monument Avenue in Richmond VA

"Charles and Lee," oil, 16"h x 12"w, copyright Jill Banks 2013
While husband Randy and son Sam drove, chipped and putted in a Member-Guest Golf Tournament, I painted away this morning on Monument Avenue as part of PleinAir Richmond 's "Fast and Fresh" two-hour paint "race."

There were tons of professional and hobbyist artists that started along with me at 9am -- addressing their canvases -- and ended promptly at 11am.

A very tough decision was what to paint.  The "Charles" of "Charles and Lee" is Charles Dickinson who had already set up his umbrella facing the opposite direction to me. It was that umbrella that formed the perfect counterpoint (in my opinion, anyway) to the marble base of the General Robert E. Lee statue. Unaware that I was painting him at the time, Charles approved of my use of him and his gear as co-subjects. He was painting this past week as part of the 35 artists juried from around the country.  Charles came to Richmond from St. Augustine en route to many artistic adventures up the East Coast.

That's me (Jill Banks) with painting in progress this morning
I ended up perhaps the most photographed artist in the bunch of us out there. I wore my infamous smock that looks plucked from the days of the French Impressionists which, along with my hat, won me the unofficial title of Best Dressed as an Artist. I know that a lot of my visitors got a huge kick out of it.

Last night's reception for the "On Location" exhibit of work from my Plein Air Landscape class was great fun. Work met with much well-founded appreciation.  You can see that exhibit during open hours Wednesdays and Saturdays, noon to 4pm through June 29 at the Artists' Atelier Gallery at 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls, VA. Thanks to all who came!!!! It wasn't until the last guests left that I
We put our easels up with the wet paintings, framed, titled, priced right at 11am
thought how nice it would have been to have a camera to record the party. Next time!

Cracking a Coconut

"Fruit Tropics," oil, 20"h x 16"w, ©Jill Banks 2013
Today started in a bit of a panic.  At 9am, two kind souls from Great Falls Studios were due to arrive to photograph me and my studio for an ongoing book project.  Getting me and my studio camera-ready meant a late night of stuffing stuff into whatever closet or storage area still had room (not much and not many) plus rehanging artwork in the prime spaces that might be photographed. This morning required more stashing, plus I needed to figure out what still life setup would fill my yet blank canvas.

Last night's grocery/still life object shopping brought with it a coconut, my first time purchasing the hairy tropical fruit.  Pre-9am I was googling coconut in hopes of figuring out how to open it up. I tried poking holes with a skewer (in lieu of the suggested ice pick) to drain the coconut water. Uh-uh.  Then tried tapping it along its equilibrium with a hammer ... all with part of a houseful of occupants sleeping in the level below the kitchen.  Randy saved the day (as usual) taking it into the garage to break it in two -- much more forcefully than the recommended taps.  I'd hate to have been stranded on a desert isle trying to figure out how to get into those things.

I hope the photo shoot produced something acceptable over the three-and-a-half hours and 400 images taken. I'm excited about the project that provides entree into the working spaces of artists -- mine included -- even if it means trying to get over the discomfort being caught on camera elicits.

That's it. Full day. "Fruit Tropics" is either done or almost. It came a long way from that blank canvas I faced this morning.

"Ballerinas II" Painting, Take Two

"Ballerinas II," oil, 12"h x 16"w, ©Jill Banks 2013
Even though it's been awhile since posting, I'm going to try to keep this short.  Lots to write, pictures to post, but no time to do it.

"Ballerinas II" was what I worked on today ... returning to a painting started in Franklin, Tennessee at the Imagine Gallery when there for the Women Painters of the Southeast juried show.  These beautiful models are dancers in the Nashville Ballet Company.

I also hung the "On Location" exhibit in the Artists' Atelier Gallery -- of plein air pieces from farms around the area, the Village Centre in Great Falls done by students in my Landscape class. The reception for that show is on Friday, June 14, 6-8pm at the Artists' Atelier, 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls, VA. Come join us!

Cumberland Days

"Two Tents," Quick Draw painting, oil, 10"h x 8"w, © Jill Banks 2013
This morning was the Mountain Maryland Plein Air Quick Draw in Cumberland.  I finally found the perfect spot, shielded from sunlight by a cover of trees, breeze blowing, music in the air.  "Two Tents" was the result of two hours of painting.

Before the Quick Draw, I handed in two paintings for the exhibit and judging at the Saville Gallery.  I had to choose from the four created in the last three days ... and my choices were "Chase Street" and "Cumberland Crossings." "Chase Street" was painted on Wednesday afternoon, standing on the corner of Washington and Chase Streets.  I thoroughly enjoyed that day -- getting to meet many of the neighbors with thumbs up from motorists and passerbys.

"Chase Street," oil, 16"h x 12"w, © Jill Banks 2013
"Cumberland Crossings was painted Friday morning along a bike path near Canal Place.  So many modes of transportation come together and through Cumberland. As a painter, they offered me lots of fun diagonals.

Those two paintings will be on exhibit at the Saville Gallery until June 16.

Other paintings from the week and my scouting day here in Cumberland are shown below.

It's been a fun and tiring time here.  I've enjoyed meeting Cumberland residents, fellow artists, my host family and the folks at the Allegany Arts Council.

I managed to make it onto the front page of the Cumberland Times on Thursday -- which helped make me feel like a celebrity for the day.  Well, sort of.  Ken Nolan, a Times Reporter, had interviewed and photographed me Tuesday night -- sketching to get ideas for the following day's painting session.
