"Emma at Seven Months" Monthly Portrait of a Sweet Granddaughter

"Emma at Seven Months,"(our granddaughter), oil, 10"h x 8"w, ©2017 Jill Banks
I'm still behind on my portrait a month of granddaughter Emma -- but this makes me one month closer to catching up to her.  She's depicted here being held by my Dad (wearing a red shirt) and she's in her baptism dress (that was worn my Emma's mom Michelle and Michelle's sister Sharlene).

See the rest of Emma's portraits ... and others on my web page: www.JillBanks.com

Please read yesterday's post for the scoop on this Saturday's opening reception for my solo exhibit "The Road Show" and upcoming classes.  Thanks!

Reception: Saturday, January 7, 2-6pm at the Great Falls Library, 9830 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, VA 22066. Hope to see you there!
You may view the exhibit online here.

"Peek A Boo" Granddaughter Emma at Six Months

Portraits by Commission

Miss Emma is actually approaching eight months old and I need to catch up on my portrait a month project. Finishing this one today ... started when Randy and I were happily babysitting granddaughter Emma for a few hours ... is a step in the right direction.

This is Emma trying out the front seat and turning a seat belt into a toy.

See more of my paintings of Emma on my web site in the People and Portraits Gallery.

There will be a post coming soon -- and probably an email newsletter as well -- about yesterday's fun and successful Home Studio Open House for Collectors and Students. Thank you to all who came! Painting days have been plentiful and fruitful. The house was adorned with many newly finished pieces as well as dry paint favorites.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all. I'm truly THANKFUL for YOU!

DECEMBER 2, 3, 4 -- ART STUDIO OPEN
My studio in Great Falls (at the Artists' Atelier, 756 Walker Road, Great Falls, VA) is looking bare right now ... but my home is overflowing with artwork. Must be a sign of something. But it will look great again -- just in time for the last First Friday Art Walk in the Village of the year, December 2, 6 to 9pm. Then, the studio will be open for holiday art shopping on Saturday, December 3, 10am to 5pm and Sunday, December 4, noon to 5pm. It's time for holiday shopping ... what will you treat yourself and your loved ones with this year? I'd be VERY glad to help.

"Emma Thinks You're Funny" Granddaughter Emma's Portrait Month 3

"Emma Thinks You're Funny" (Granddaughter's portrait Month 3), oil, 8"h x 8"w, ©2016 Jill Banks

My Mom, Dad, husband Randy and I all shared the joy of a short one-day visit to see granddaughter Emma and her mom and dad -- son Sam and daughter-in-law Michelle.

Emma was showing off. At a few days shy of becoming a three-month old, she rolled over -- multiple times and on the second try figured out how to wiggle her second arm free.  It's not clear yet whether she likes the result of finding herself on her stomach. Maybe she'll need to figure out the next trick -- rolling back?

Sure was a day full of joy.

See Emma's One Month Portrait on my web site here.
And Emma at Two Month's on my web site here.

Granddaughter Emma, Month Two

"Emma, Month Two," oil, 8"h x 8"w, ©2016 Jill Banks
Quick post ... but the Memorial Day weekend has been spent with lots of neat family gatherings and lots of granddaughter Emma time. Plus my Mom's 86th birthday celebrating! Plus Emma meeting her second cousin (?) Nicholas who is four months' old.

Mom and Dad with two of their great-grandbabies: Emma and Nicholas
I am painting a mini portrait of Emma each month for her first year. Today was her two-month birthday and she agreed to model for me this morning. How's that for timing?

A joy related to the monthly portraits is that Sam and Michelle are sending us (at my request) daily photos or videos of Emma. I have plenty of potential resources plus a reason to smile ... big time ... each day. Yea!

I hope you are enjoying lots of time celebrating with loved ones!

A Popularity Boost

"Janssen's Market," oil, 12"h x 16"w, ©Jill Banks 2015 -- FAV15 in the October 2015 BoldBrush Competition ($1250)

Informed Collector Recommends ... Jill Banks (Me)

Yesterday, rather suddenly, I was getting an onrush of post likes, new email newsletter subscribers, and Facebook fan page likes. Wow. Did everyone who picked up one of my business cards at the Fairfax Fine Art Festival this weekend hit the Internet on Tuesday?

Maybe some of them did ... but the "culprit" behind this popularity is mainly being spotlighted on Informed Collector -- an email newsletter showcasing artists to watch. Wish to see it?

Thanks for all the support and enthusiasm received!

"Back Story," oil, 40"h x 30"w, ©2016 Jill Banks,  FAV15 in Jan 2016 ($5850)
Artists are selected from their entries to a monthly Bold Brush Art competition. Each month I enter two pieces. In the last seven months, seven of my paintings have been selected for inclusion in the FAV15% -- or the Fine Art Views and FASO (Fine Art Studio Online -- websites for artists) favorite 15% of the entries. One of my paintings -- "Late Night Saloon" was a FAV15 twice -- in March 2016 and September 2015. The rest of the recent line-up of FAV15's include "Scene at the Bar" (FAV15- Feb 2016), "Back Story" (FAV15-Jan 2016), "A Little Rusty" (FAV15-Dec 2015), "Janssen's Market" (FAV15-Oct 2015) and "Street Lights" (FAV15-Sep 2015).

A Correlation

We agree. Your friends/favorites ... are my friends/favorites. Many of my entries to the Bold Brush contest are hot off the easel -- and I enter my best. Of the seven FAV15 pieces -- five have been purchased -- with only "Back Story" and "Janssen's Market" available. Those two received lots of intense attention, too, at last weekend's festival.

First Painting of Emma -- Pretty in Pink

"Emma, First Month," oil, 10"h x 8"w, ©2016 Jill Banks
You knew it was going to happen. Today while granddaughter Emma (who will be one month old this Friday) visited the rest of the family and I was keeping my germs away ... at least I had the pleasure of painting her. My plan is to create a small portrait of her each month during her first year. That's sure to keep those daily photos coming.

Each month, Emma's portrait will be posted here and added to the People and Portraits Gallery on my web site.

Changes have been so quick even this first month as she's found her thumb, keeps her eyes open more and become more expressive. I'll be documenting time flying.

I really don't know if there is anyone else on the planet interested in having a small portrait done of the baby in their life once a month for the first year -- but if you know of one, send him/her my way. This was fun!

And with this portrait at only 10"h x 8"w, her portrayal is not nearly as dainty as she is.  With 11 more to go, my thought is that I'll keep the size canvas consistent as well as her face. Hope that works.

Paint with Me in Italy this Summer -- June 26 to July 3.

Bailey Was Here: My Youngest Face is #16

"Sweet Bailey" is Face #16. The cloth flowers on her head were only there sometimes.
Whew! It worked.
Bailey and her mom came to sit for me today. Bailey's all of six-and-a-half months' old and is as cute as you see here ... or even cuter. I took over 100 photos today but painted only from life. No touchups here or there. The photos were just because Bailey looked so darn cute no matter where she was or what she was doing. It's amazing how big a space looks when a munchkin is sitting in it.

I was thinking before Bailey and mom showed up how large I wanted her face to be on the canvas. Did I want to scale her down so you had some sense for her littleness or did I want to zoom in and give you a closer look at her Bailey-ness? What happens is the size/scale just suggests itself ... and once put down you can't imagine it any other way.

Bailey and her mom check out progress. Note the flowers had fallen off.
Just to give you a picture of the process ... you can't direct a baby to sit any particular way. Mom held her and when I wanted her head to look up, toys would go a bit higher. Bailey's mouth was only visible sometimes. She was happy to be chewing on toys, mom's hand or sucking on her binky. Her head would turn, look up, look down (all of her face would disappear).  If I couldn't see her mouth, I couldn't see her chin and her cheeks would change shape. Mom stuck flowers on her head with "booger tape" (I think that's what she called it) and that would last for a little while and then fall off. So I painted them when they were on and painted other parts when they were available/visible. A "go with the flow" painting. I loved every minute of it.

I could have painted Bailey a thousand different ways.  It was hard to pick just one.

Modeling's hard work. I'm pooped.
As this painting progressed, I just found myself smiling at the painted Bailey. There's no way not to. (Try it.) This painting just makes me happy.

Bailey's mom is someone I love and the two of us were looking forward to just spending time together and enjoying ourselves. Which we did. She's unbelievable with kids ... and has always wanted them but had to wait a good long while before that happened. Seeing her as a mom is beautiful ... and she has two lucky daughters.

Bailey is an extraordinarily happy and peaceful baby. Supposedly, according to her mom, she was a little crankier than normal. We both agreed that if that was cranky, mom didn't have much to complain about.

I was so glad this worked. You never know. No angst. Just happy, peaceful, easygoing painting of a beautiful baby. Yea!

I will be painting Bailey's sister and mom and potentially her dad. (This will be news to him.) In my call for volunteers, I've had many families, many couples come forward. I'll have to ask  permission before posting some copies of emails that I've been sent ... but the reactions have been unbelievably positive ... and it's fun for people to share this experience with a spouse.

I did get a great email from Judith St. Ledger-Roty (Face #15) who has more than forgiven me for holding her hostage all day. She enjoyed it ... a lot!

So, now I need to regroup. Get ready for tomorrow's portrait class. Take care of some art business. Have dinner. All that stuff.

And pictures of Bailey will be dancing around in my head. Beautiful day.

Read more about my 100 Faces in 100 Days Project in earlier posts (every day since January 1) and two posts about the planning stages in late December ... and on my web site which I just updated tonight. On my 100 Faces in 100 Days project page, each of my first 16 sitters paintings is there along with a link back to their respective blog posts. Cool.
