"Alan" Accepted into the 83rd Grand National Exhibition

Good news! Today's mail delivered one of those self-addressed stamped envelopes that I send out with my responses to Call for Entries. In it was a letter with big type: Congratulations! My entry "Alan" has been accepted into the 2011 American Artists Professional League Grand National Exhibition. The show will hang in the Salmagundi Club, 47 Fifth Avenue, NYC from Tuesday, November 1 through Friday, November 11. The exhibit is open to the public on those dates from 1pm to 6pm with a reception, awards presentation and annual meeting on Sunday, November 6, 2:00 to 5:00pm.

"Alan" has already had a good history. This painting was a finalist in Artist's Magazine's Annual Art Competition in the portrait category. And, "Alan" was on the cover of élan Magazine in May 2006.  I felt like a star! (And so did Alan!)

It's tough to choose the right piece to submit to an exhibit, and for that matter, the right exhibits for me. I have to either go see the exhibit in person or take a good look at it online, if possible. This is my second time being accepted into the Grand National, and I attended the reception for it when my piece "Sunflowers II" was part of the exhibit in 2009. Accepted entries are traditional realism only. So, I work to figure out the right fit. Actually, I agonize over it. Perhaps I think this helps my chances.

Fun Time at the Demo Last Night

I painted a very quick demo last night following the meeting at the Vienna Arts Society's Art Center. This is an awfully good group of people who sponsor an annual Treasury of Art show each year in November. (Last year, I'd won 3rd Place with my three-color chalk drawing of "Becky.")

I painted a little -- a simple still life -- and talked a lot about my 100 Faces project in between discussing not using mediums, working on boards vs. canvas, the thickness of the paint, etc. It's rare for me to paint for just an hour (or less). That's when I'm just getting started, usually. But, I think it's important to get over having to do something we're not used to -- and find a way to adjust or just adopt the right attitude. That can be as simple as changing your expectations. As in ... lightening up ... and delivering information, an approach and hopefully, some inspiration.

Open Hours at the Atelier and Last Chances -- 100 Faces in 100 Days

My 100 Faces in 100 Days paintings are all up at the Artists' Atelier (1144 Walker Road, Great Falls, VA 22066) for just one more week. I'll take them down on Saturday, September 24. Open hours are Fridays and Saturdays, noon to 4pm or contact me by email for another time. The exhibit carried over for extra weeks into September ... but this is it! Later I will work on finding other places to exhibit them as a group ... but who knows where that will be. Or when.

I'll be in the Artists' Atelier, the studio I share with 14 other artists at 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls. Last year, the tour drew 7200+ visitors from throughout the DC area. Don't miss it!

October 20-22, Out & About Norfolk 2011: Juried Plein Air Event and Wet Paint Sale. I'll be spending three days in Norfolk for this 5th Annual Plein Air Competition ... painting away. I'm excited!

Fantastic Reception and Ice Cream Social

Last night's reception and today's ice cream social were absolutely fantastic. I am going to need to report on today's Ice Cream Social another day -- but that may have been my favorite event, ever. I loved it ... just need to gather more photos and thoughts for it. What I loved about it is that adults love ice cream, too ... but it's a whole lot easier to get kids to (another) art event if it features ice cream sundaes. Still, you'll have to wait for that report.

It was fantastic! The studio and gallery looked amazing  ... but more importantly, a lot of great people showed up and, I believe, thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The events mimic the success of the project. I am proud of myself for completing a highly challenging goal of painting 100 Faces in 100 Days. What's exciting is how tangible it is. It's hanging on the walls and replaying in my head. I see the march of days. The challenges. The rewards. I wanted to involve others in what I do -- my passion for art. They are! That happened. There's a new community ... and many of them came to Friday and Saturday's events.

I love to talk about the project, because it was a personal journey and 100 days of other people's stories. It's infinitely interesting.

Studio Clean-Up and Contemplation

Working on the Studio

My main studio wall with new and old favorites. My plein air pieces are to the right.

Today I forwent painting for odds and ends. I spent a good part of my day up on a ladder adding names and numbers to each of my 100 ... and as you can see quite a few of my faces are way up high. More ladder time to touch up paint so you see my faces instead of the smudge on the wall. More ladder time to put up the very nifty vinyl lettering for the show (that I order from www.mrletter.com). I sorted through pieces to come home for awhile. And I mulled -- way too much -- about my studio wall. There's another wall to sort out. Randy and I have a plan ... but I forgot to order a frame. Oops.

"Sweet Temptation Cupcakes" and "Impossibly Pink Peonies"

So, one big wall and a mini wall look good. I promise to straighten the pieces up before next week. And, I'll be concentrating on how to best present the stories that accompany each sitting. It's tricky.

Tomorrow I head to Alexandria in the morning to paint with some members of the Art League Plein Air Painters. I can't wait!!!!! This isn't the official "Waterfront Activation" weekend so we will spread out a bit more. I want more practice so I can eventually hold my head up high when out there painting with nature in control. And, tomorrow I'll be donning a new hat that my mom bought for me for the occasion.

I've heard some wonderful comments, too, about my painting that's in the Art League show, "A New York State Of Mind." I appreciate it! If you have a chance to get to the gallery this month, please take a look. A picture doesn't even come close to what it's like to see the piece in person.

In the News

I'm going to be painting today. That's a promise. So you will see something new here later today.

I sent off a "test run" of a book on my "100 Faces in 100 Days" to the printer. This is really a check for image quality ... without much of the text I want to include ... but even that much has been testing my endurance on the computer. I so much wanted to be in front of an easel instead.

"A New York State of Mind" Wins Honorable Mention and Show's Up!

Phew!

Hanging my "100 Faces in 100 Days" exhibit was rough. More so for Randy ... but the two of us were a sorry lot last night leaving the Atelier to head home. I didn't end up with photos of Randy taking a nap because he was actively working for six hours straight. He's a very precise kind of guy. That comes in handy in his profession (he's a home builder) and hanging exhibits. Each face is carefully placed on its panel and each panel lines up its neighbors.

I need to tackle signage and other stuff -- I guess tonight -- and I'll have a show. And, I (desperately) need to spiff up my studio space with new work. It means a trip to the framer to get mats/frames for drawings and odd-sized work and matching work to frames for a delivery coming tomorrow for others.

I will be holding regular, extended open hours at the Artists' Atelier, 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, in Great Falls. Stop by Wednesday through Saturday, 12:30 to 6:00pm or by appointment. Note: I may not make it in on Wednesday, August 3. My computer is holding me captive. (Email me.)

"A New York State of Mind" Wins Honorable Mention

So Randy's braving entering my work in the Annual 'Scapes Show at the Art League was worth it. He said that yesterday was a zoo. "A New York State of Mind" is large - 40" x 30" plus frame ... and he had to carry it and another rather large, also heavy piece, two blocks for receiving.

The 'Scapes exhibit at the Art League is its most popular -- with visitors and Art League members. It runs from August 3 to September 5 in the Art League Gallery, 105 N. Union Street, Alexandria (in the Torpedo Factory). "A New York State of Mind" won an Honorable Mention from juror, Sarah Tanguy, independent curator and critic, as well as a curator for Art in Embassies (AIE), US Department of State, based in Washington, DC. An opening/awards reception is on Thursday, August 11, 6:30 to 8:00pm with awards presented at 7:30pm.

"July Peaches" In Progress, Perseverance and More

I get the feeling I'm posting this ... just to avoid for a bit longer the ridiculous to do list I typed up for myself today. (I did tackle a bit of it.)

Peaches and Perseverance
"July Peaches" are in progress. Day three today. Day one, painted on July 2 was full of promise. Day two, which happened to be July 3rd was an absolute disaster of proportions I haven't witnessed in awhile. Thus, there are no photos -- or evidence of day two. Phew.

It was on that infamous day two that I decided to completely change everything I had "accomplished" on day one ... and add in the flag as a compositional tool and a nod to July 4th. It created a different form of fireworks. I went home with my head down, accepting that day was a defeat. A smarter me would have left that painting after day one, let it dry for a few days and resume work when ... if I got in trouble, I could "erase" the new day's work. Okay. Next time.

 So I let it sit. And worked at it today with replacement models in a different studio. I have more work to do ... as in stars on the flag, the second peach ... and painting the heck out of those dangling peach leaves. But, I'm not doing it tomorrow.

"Conversations: 100 Faces in 100 Days" Article in élan Magazine 

The July 2011 issue of élan Magazine includes my first-person article about my 100 Faces in 100 Days project. It's beautifully laid out by Art Director Jean Davis ... and I was very relieved to see that my photos -- of so many of my faces -- turned out well in print. I've been working on improving my skills, and equipment for photographing my own art particularly for this project -- so I can have all the images I need -- for the web, book, press, etc. But, it's a scary leap. And doing your own photography can go terribly wrong. So, phew again.

I'll get permission first -- but hopefully will put the article up on my web site ... so those that don't get elan have a chance to get a peek. For my 100 Faces volunteers, the following of you have your paintings pictured ... in some way accompanying the article:

"Lunch at Jasmine's" Sketch Today

I spent almost all my day on art-related -- but not art-making -- stuff. I currently have an awful lot in my "to do" column and each of those tasks are major and important and terribly time-consuming. They relate to my 100 Faces in 100 Days project and include:

1. photographing each of the faces -- again -- for consistency and quality
2. promotion/press releases for my second local exhibit of those 100 Faces in August at the Artists' Atelier
3. writing a book on the project (to include those photographs)
4. research and contact other art venues, galleries, museums for the exhibit

I was working on #4 today -- and made some progress.

This means that today's "art of the day" is a little less thrilling. My husband, Randy, and I had lunch today at Jasmine Cafe at Lake Anne in Reston (VA) and he had to leave partway through lunch to take care of a favor for our son and daughter-in-law. That left me with some alone time inside ... with air conditioning ... to sketch those diners outside. (In my defense, these folks weren't modeling for me ... ) I would have preferred to using ink and pen&ink but figured that Eduardo, the chef/owner, wouldn't appreciate my risking a spill.

I do want to get there to paint -- on the Plaza -- but have a hard time tolerating the heat. Tough to pick a day to do that.

Joined the Art League Plein Air Painters

There was a new opportunity listed in the Art League's July Tidings Newsletter -- with a call for artists who would like to paint on the waterfront some Sunday's throughout the summer. Guess what? I signed up and plan to be there this coming Sunday morning with three or four other painters. It should be fun. I know my painting is bound to be entertaining. I'm looking forward to meeting the other painters in the group and being out in that great spot. And, I'm hoping for a cool breeze.

"Weekend Edition" Painting In Progress and Demo/Talk Tomorrow

This post is longer since I've been AWOL lately.

I started "Weekend Edition" as a demo during Great Falls Foundation for the Arts Art Night Out fundraiser. I visited a lot and painted a little. Last night, I put the paintbrush down when I was talking. Tomorrow, I'll have to be better at combining the two activities.

Demo/Artist's Talk, Saturday, May 21, 2-5pm

I'll be painting a very nice face tomorrow afternoon at the Great Falls Library, 9830 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls. I hope you can join me for an interesting afternoon. We'll be surrounded by the 100 paintings from my "100 Faces in 100 Days" exhibit. I'm committed to talking about the project while painting. If I go, "uh" or "hmmm," you'll know I needed to concentrate on my painting for a minute.

The best way I can let you in on all the wonderful elements of this project is to talk to you, while doing what I did for 100 days,  surrounded by all these faces. I also hope that you'll get to hear about the project from my volunteer sitters' perspectives. (Hint.)

I'm not sure how the painting will turn out tomorrow. I have three hours ... that's it ... and divided attention. Occasionally, life reminds me of a magic trick. I did choose my sitter for his beard. I had to simplify something.

The exhibit continues through May 31. 

More on "Weekend Edition"
"Weekend Edition" will include the page of the Washington Post's Weekend Section from May 6 that lists my "100 Faces in 100 Days" exhibit as the Gallery Opening of the Week. That's it undefined in the upper left corner. At one point last night, I asked Randy to fill up my mug (that's my lucky cup) with coffee. It came back steaming ... now I know that I'll also include those wisps of steam. Should be fun and a new challenge. This one's a work in progress ... hopefully I can squeeze in some more painting time during a very crazy week. Hmmmm.

Eastern Bluebird Chosen as Official Great Falls Bird

Well, that was lucky! Out of the seven bird candidates on the ballot for official bird, I had painted two for bird-related art exhibits spread throughout the year. I painted the Eastern Bluebird (the winner, #1) and the Wild Turkey (last place finisher, #7). So, "Blue" will be a candidate for a future art competition featuring the winning bird. Both "Blue" and "Turkey Gone Wild" will be part of a Great Falls Studios group exhibit at the Great Falls Library in June.

Two Receptions For the 100 Faces in 100 Days Exhibit

A Wonderful Celebration: Reception #1 Today
Today, was Reception #1 for my "100 Faces in 100 Days" Exhibit at the Great Falls Library and it was wonderful ... lots of very familiar faces showed up, enjoying a great time. I'll post photos from today's events later.

There are many, many more photos but I'm not sure they tell the whole story. We were ready ahead of schedule (that's a first) thanks to the great help of son Sam and daughter-in-law Michelle. And, my highly organized and experienced dad who picked out, purchased and arranged food, drinks and flowers. We had some early arrivals who wanted a real chance to see the show and talk to me about the project. Smart move. That became more and more difficult later. Interestingly, it's a great conversation starter when guests have shared such a unique experience. Faces recognized one another from the blog or web site and generally got a kick out the whole project and event. It really was great.

It felt pretty wonderful to have filled the room with so much life. The combination of the paintings and this animated circle of volunteers with friends and family in tow was powerful, indeed. This project has brought me close to a lot of people ... some I hadn't even known before.

I will post more photos later. Some reside on different cameras ... but there are lots I'd like you to see. But nothing is like being there.

So, see what you think ... tomorrow. I know it's Mother's Day and I think this is a fine way to spend it.

Reception #2 Tomorrow, Sunday, May 8

And, there will be another reception tomorrow, Sunday, May 8 (Mother's Day), 2:30-5:30pm ... same spot at the Great Falls Library, 9830 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, VA. The Washington Post had great coverage of the exhibit in Friday's Weekend Section as the Gallery Opening of the Week (p. 30) ... as happening Sunday. So we'll be there to wish you a Happy Mother's Day. I hope you can come out. Don't know if it can be as great as today, but who knows.

Today was Emily's (Face #92) birthday. A cupcake and some singing.

It was difficult enough to pull one outfit out of my closet today. Now two?

The Good News and the Not-So-Good News: A Correction

100 Faces in 100 Days  is The Washington Post's Gallery Opening of the Week

The Washington Post Weekend Section has chosen my 100 Faces in 100 Days Exhibit at the Great Falls Library (in Great Falls, VA) as the Gallery Opening Of The Week ... but have the incorrect day for the Reception. My reception is on Saturday, May 7 ... from 2:30 to 5:30pm at the Great Falls Library, 9830 Georgetown Pike, Great Falls, VA. (The Washington Post has indicated that it's on Sunday.) An article appears on page 30 of the Friday, May 6 Weekend Section. The coverage is incredible ... but I'm hoping that the library will also let me open up on Sunday and just have a two-day reception. That's not a sure bet since the library is closed on Sundays ... but I'll figure something out. Check back here or my web site tomorrow night for the official word about Sunday.  In any case, I hope you can come to tomorrow's Saturday, May 7 opening.

The Post does mention my Saturday, May 21 Artist's Talk/Demo from 2 to 5pm, also at the library ... so that's great.

The photo and article are right in the middle of the galleries/museum show listings of the Weekend Section. Time to use all that flexibility/go with the flow attitude I was practicing with my 100 Faces project to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

A Little Painting Time on "Francie's Peonies" and Lots of Labels

Just a quick post ... because I only had a little time to paint today. Mainly I'm putting together signs/labels for all my 100 Faces ... which is taking FOREVER. Amazing. So when I needed a break, I worked more on my demo painting from yesterday. It's getting there. I am again at the point that all I want to do is paint, paint, paint. I'm inspired. Excited. Dying to just see what can happen.

Last Day in London Revisited
I've got to be quick ... since there's still loads to do tonight. But here is the drawing I did the last day in London (on Sunday) after spending a great time exploring the Wallace House collection. I wish the fountains had been on ... but it was an awfully beautiful place nonetheless.

I sat next to three women (a mom and her two grown daughters) and they were fun folks to share a bench with. I was drawing the scenery, but I wanted to concentrate on them. I did get permission to photograph them to create a painting of them sooner or later. They were a bit reluctant at first, but warmed to the idea. When I do get around to it, I'll look at the photos but think about hearing their voices and laughter right next to me.

Lots and Lots of Faces
I've been working on getting my act together for hanging the 100 Faces in 100 Days Exhibit next week. This is one complicated undertaking. This 100 business makes each task take SOOO much longer. On the plate today was working on painting edges I'd neglected, practicing my talk for tomorrow at the McLean Community Center, and pulling together info and photos for the press. Photos of individual paintings (faces) from my project don't really convey the scope of it. So here's an attempt of giving a clearer picture of what it's about. Sort of. I'm using different photos for my press releases but here's one ... just for you. You can read all about the project ... one face/person at a time on this blog ... posts from January 1 to April 10.

A Day of Drawing: The British Museum and Regent's Park

Two quick posts. I've written enough lately.

This morning was spent drawing at the British Museum ... where we made a beeline for the controversial Elgin Marbles, saved from the ruins of the Parthenon. It seemed like Ancient Greece visited London and has been staying awhile. I went for a cushy, wonderful chair (the only one in sight) to sit in and draw. Talk about being in a coveted position. Given how creaky my bones were from sitting on the ground at Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and near Parliament, I was staying put. No offers to give up my post were forthcoming. Heaven.

I also visited a wonderful art supply store ... L. Cornelissen, around the corner from the British Museum. Nancy Keane had given me the well-appreciated hint. With bottles full of pure pigment and painters' potions everywhere, it was a whole lot of fun. I actually bought some stuff. That's an endorsement.

The afternoon was spent at Regent's Park on a drawing exposition. What a gorgeous place. All these parks are unbelievable. I can't imagine the crew that designs, plants, maintains these spots. Walking through them makes me feel joyful. I wonder how these parks affect the psyche of Londoners. Sure seems like they enjoy them.

I'm anxious to return to color. I've enjoyed my drawing days but feel a bit like my hands are tied behind my back. What colors there are around here make a major impact ... perhaps because there's a lion's share dose of gray. The gardens were dotted with colors... chartreuse, deep purples, yellow dots, dark green spires. It'd be nice to show you. Bet that comes with time.

 Drawing time was cut short by our first encounter with rain on an almost two-week trip. Who would have thought?

It's almost time to head home.

Here's a Repeat: You've Got to See the School! Register Now... Classes Start Beginning of May!

Wow! I went to see the classroom that I normally teach in ... now expanded to include my previous second downstairs studio at 1144 Walker Road, Great Falls, VA. Wow again! I'm so excited about teaching there in May. The expansion made all the difference. It gets great light. There's plenty of room. Such a difference. I'll try to take a photo of the classroom soon and post it here. Yea!

Two days worth of London on this entry… and all I can give are the highlights. Big, full, great days!

Hand painted fan in the Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace

Yesterday was Day Royal. Our morning tour was of the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace that featured a Dutch Landscape show then a rotating regular exhibit in two main salons which were beautiful. This was the first time that the furnishings and furniture truly held a candle for me to the paintings and sculptures. They were absolutely amazing. But it was the extras … like a handpainted, exquisite fan … that shocked me.

The afternoon was “free” and a few of us, led by Rob, headed off to draw in St. James’s Gardens adjacent to Buckingham Palace. An observation: everyone in London heads for their gorgeous gardens to enjoy all parts of their days … week long. This was my first time exploring the St. James’s Gardens … and what an extraordinary treat. Beautiful flowers and birds, ducks, swans, pelicans … birds I’d never seen. Plants I’ve never seen. People enjoying the day … their style … everywhere. At the very end, with a duck caretaker’s house as a backdrop, we set up to draw.

I wasn’t expecting pelicans and these took on all sorts of poses for me. I chose the tame ones I thought would last.  This super landscape format was fun and the subject was perfect. The standouts on this visit for me have been the parks (with people), the window boxes and flowers (all healthy and creatively arranged) and a sense of place/people. I’ve got more thinking to do about the last one…

At 5pm, we went on a tour of Buckingham Palace State Rooms. Unbelievable interiors … as you’d expect … with cascading chandeliers, intricate mouldings, fancy furniture, and absolutely incredible art. King George IV, according to our tour guide, was the great collector in the family. The absolute highlight among extraordinary works by Peter Paul Rubens, Canaletto, a Vermeer, Guido Reni, Canova and more … was the very finest Rembrandt I’ve ever set eyes on.  My favorite: Rembrandt's painting of "Agatha Bas" painted in 1641. It was tough to pull our group from the main gallery hall to go see the music room or more portraits of the royal family.  We weren’t able to tour the ballroom. Something about a royal wedding coming up next week…

Walking in John Singer Sargent's Footsteps

And now for today.

We spent the morning at the National Portrait Gallery, concentrating on the John Singer Sargent portraits. I loved his portrait of Henry James and Coventry Patmore. I'm beginning to like the head and shoulders, more intimate portraits to life-sized or larger-than-life versions. I want to see the person's face and I can't do that if they're towering above me. I also saw incredible portraits by artists I wasn’t aware of before. Always happens. What I walked away with from this morning is how deeply intrigued I am with capturing people/humanity on canvas. I’m always a bit afraid of going too far in that direction, because I like to be able to paint according to my own muse. As soon as you’re painting real people, they tend to care about how they are portrayed. That’s not as much fun. I also came away with the thought that all of these individuals seemed a bit lonely. My people will have to have people.

For our major treat, this afternoon we were able to visit Julian Barrow’s studio at 33 Tite Street … one  floor up from John Singer Sargent’s London studio. Sargent had also painted in the space we visited.  What a great place to paint, despite an abundance of stairs. Julian and his wife graciously allowed our enthusiastic group to visit and enjoy … plus fed us cucumber sandwiches to boot. We were happy campers.

Back to Parliament

Afterwards, Randy and I returned to Parliament’s grounds to get a chance to finish up my drawing from a few days ago. The light was fleeting but I think I got it. Some adjustments to come… maybe.

Tonight we splurged on a fantastic dinner in the Portrait Gallery Restaurant that is open late on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It has the perfect view of the city. Wow! I bet a painting or two develops from tonight. Did I say, “wow”?

And coming up as soon as I get home (yikes!)...

Here's a Repeat: You've Got to See the School! Register Now... Classes Start Beginning of May!

Wow! I went to see the classroom that I normally teach in ... now expanded to include my previous second downstairs studio at 1144 Walker Road, Great Falls, VA. Wow again! I'm so excited about teaching there in May. The expansion made all the difference. It gets great light. There's plenty of room. Such a difference.
