One Exhibit Up, Another Coming Down

"Here and There" Coming Down
"Irish Pub," oil, 18"h x 24", ©Jill Banks 2014 is leaving Katie's
"Here and There," my solo exhibit of cafes, restaurant and dining scenes at Katie's Coffee at the Old Brogue in Great Falls, VA -- comes down tomorrow. So the car will be temporarily loaded up with boxes and paintings until hung in new spots.

I'll be a tad sad to take it down. It's been fun eating there often this month surrounded by my paintings -- watching and listening for reactions from the fellow patrons around me. They have certainly been seen by a whole lot of eyeballs.

Interior Painting: "Missing Mary Beth"

"Missing Mary Beth," oil, 16"h x 12"w, ©Jill Banks 2014

LOVED painting this today -- even though it came post-teaching, post-a-recovery-lunch.

On Sunday, Mary Beth Gaiarin came to sit for my portrait class for the second week in a row -- but in a different pose, dress, setup.  Each time she got up from the chair for a break, this is at least, approximately what I saw. Obviously, I'd like to have painted her in the chair, holding the flowers -- as she was -- but I also wanted to paint this scene. And, after all my still life students left for the day, I did.

The pillow on the chair is an image of a cat dressed up like Henry VIII -- a favorite purchase made at the Portobello Road Market in London. A piece of home in the classroom.

I was planning to post a series of inspirational interiors/still lifes -- including one seen in the Denver Art Museum of a whole room, an armchair with a fish in it -- but my photos of that are yet to be found. Oh well. The mystery of the July 7 & 8 photos still to be solved. Looked online, too. Wasn't patient enough, it seems.

Go see "Here and There" exhibit at the Old Brogue, 760C Walker Road, Great Falls, VA through February 28, 2014. Many folks are enjoying it. Hope you can, too. (It's online on my web site as well.)

"Hoot and Flowers" In Progress

"Hoot and Flowers" work in progress, oil, 24"h x 18"w, Jill Banks
I REAL-ly have no time to post -- but still had to share the setup that filled my afternoon of painting. So much fun!

I've been wanting to paint this owl that creeps some people out a bit in person but whose balls of fur were a delight to capture. He/she looks friendly here, right?

Off I go.

Go see "Here and There" exhibit at the Old Brogue, 760C Walker Road, Great Falls, VA through February 28, 2014. Many folks are enjoying it. Hope you can, too. (It's online on my web site as well.)

Latest Horse Painting, Cupcakes

"Blondie," oil, 12"h x 12"w, ©Jill Banks 2014
A little bribe here. I'm making homemade ... from scratch ... chocolate cupcakes for Saturday's reception for the Flowers, Chocolates and Romance exhibit at the Artists' Atelier. Come for a visit, not just for those cupcakes but because the show is going to change soon and my studio's chock full of new and favorite oil paintings I think you'd like to see. Reception, Saturday, February 22, noon to 4pm at 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls, VA. I hope to see you there.

Latest Horse
Not sure about the name, but she's a pretty one who was competing along with her rider in the 4H event at Frying Pan Park in Herndon VA last Spring/Summer. Fun to paint. I'm sure fun to ride.
See more of my animal paintings in the Animals, Birds and Wildlife Collection on my website.

Here and There Solo Exhibit

Portrait of Gabrielle Finished

"Portrait of Gabrielle," oil, 20"h x 16"w, ©Jill Banks 2014
Sixteen-year-old ballerina Gabrielle volunteered to sit for my first day demo for this Winter's Portrait class back in mid-January.

I love witnessing the interaction between our models and the class -- as the person you are painting/studying gets up from the model stand and visits side by side.  Set up on a pedestal, then sharing in the conversation and easy comraderie.

I'm always still watching, observing -- on breaks, too -- as this other view seems to bring out person and personality in fuller form.

Gabrielle showed her gentle, inquisitive spirit. She listened with interest and was comfortable, enjoyable, fun company.

I didn't show a photo of my first pass -- the demo painting as is. I wanted to be able to work on it more -- if needed without inviting any side by side comparisons. (I've got to have a secret or two.) So the last two days I made two days worth of adjustments -- working from photos, my memory of her posing in the classroom (her spirit) and that demo sketch.  My memory is what told me that I'd captured her.

Her mom and dad are thrilled to be purchasing it. I'm certain, too, that it will be very special to Gabrielle as she remembers her day on the other side of the easel and peeks in progress.

Today was day six of the class. It is such a really neat group working hard at a challenging task. For four hours, we seem in a vacuum. Time flies. Good humor mixed with some frustration and excitement fill the room.

Two important reminders:
1) Join Me in Italy: Keep thinking about -- or better yet, SIGN up for my workshop held August 3 to August 10 in the wine region of Piemonte, Italy.  Get more info on my web site's classes page.  More folks are joining in the fun. I hope you will, too!

"Irish Pub," oil, 18"h x 24"w, ©Jill Banks 2014 on view at the Old Brogue thru Feb. 28
2)"Here and There" -- my solo show at Katie's Coffee at the Old Brogue is on view through February 28 at 760C Walker Road, Great Falls, VA. February's a short month -- made even shorter with a few snowstorms thrown our way. Make sure you see it ... and let me know what you think. Some of you are pictured in one of the paintings hanging there. So far, no one has reported in. Oh -- and -- I will be borrowing two of the Brogue paintings for a day, from Monday night (February 17) to Tuesday afternoon (February 18) for varnishing and photographing. You'll see some temporary replacements then -- so check in and check back. More info, see my events page. See the show online here.

Plus, we'll be holding a special mini reception this Saturday, February 22, noon to 4pm at the gallery at the Artists' Atelier, 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls VA for the "Flowers, Chocolates and Romance" exhibit. I'll be there and  hope you'll come and enjoy. Valentine's Day is a state of mind -- not confinable to the 14th.

Just a quick post. For Sunday's portrait session, Mark -- dressed in revolutionary soldier gear came to sit for the class -- and this time I snuck in some time to paint in between teaching. Couldn't resist.

It's not often that a revolutionary soldier crosses my path.

The class did SO well.  In today's Still Life class, too.

Thank you for reading!

I've been trying to get back to this self portrait for some time now. Today was the day.

In 2011, during my 100 Faces in 100 Days project -- when I painted an alla prima portrait a day for 100 days of anyone who agreed to sit for me -- my plan from about halfway through was that my face would be the 100th. That was until I received a much better offer and Robert E. Simon, the founder of Reston, VA agreed to sit on April 10, 2011 as he turned 97 years old.

A few years later ... my turn.  I must say that my company was not nearly as fascinating to me as was the rest of yours.

"Blue Period" and It's All About Attitude

"Blue Period," oil on linen-lined Centurion panel, 12"h x 12"w,©Jill Banks 2014
If I happened to mush all the paint on my palette together, it would make a decidedly reddish mud. My palette is full of brilliant red hues: alizarin crimson (permanent), quinacridone red, cadmium red light, perylene red, venetian red, perhaps some scarlets, vermilion, cad orange.

But there are other colors residing there ... despite prods from an avid collector asking me if I was perhaps "missing my tubes of blue?"

Blame for the shortage might be my parents carpeting our entire house in Cold Spring Harbor, New York in one shade of blue. That was a long time ago and eventually blue has crept back into my house, life and art -- in moderation.

Here's an exception. An abundance of blue with only one pile of those reds put in for good measure. There are other bluish paintings in my repertoire. Just look around my web site and some cerulean, ultramarine, cobalt, even phtalo blue will pop up.

Multiple Batches
I will say that this still life setup was tough to keep paintable. My first batch of hydrangeas were purchased and a version of what appears here was set up on my countertop looking absolutely gorgeous when I went to bed that night. Next morning they were limped over, curled up.

I wanted to paint that gorgeous version so much ... I bought another batch. Covered it up to keep it warm getting to the car. Figured I needed to paint it quickly... and did. But those hydrangeas were again wilting in front of me. Good thing I'm a painter, not a photographer.

Attitude, Acceptance, Learning
An artist friend early on in my painting career sent me a quotation that in essence said that an artist will never be satisfied. That dissatisfaction is what drives us to continue -- to try again. I thought about it and hoped she and the artist quoted were wrong about that. Here I was -- a naturally upbeat, energetic, happy person headed down a path to what?

I get that quotation better now. I'm still a naturally upbeat, energetic, happy person but one who is constantly striving to paint more amazing work.  It is like a hunger ... and a game, to figure out how to push myself, open my eyes, keep reaching. Many artists near the end of incredibly successful, fruitful careers admit that they are just now starting, maybe, to figure things out.

If there wasn't so much to learn, to think about, to strive for ... painting wouldn't be nearly as interesting or fulfilling a lifetime passion. The challenge is great -- and once you meet one, you'll be looking for the next.

Okay, so what's the point? As a teacher and one who remembers starting out, my hope for students all along their paths is that they be patient with themselves.  Enjoy the journey, the discoveries and the flops. Bring a healthy dose of humor and the courage to try. Accept that we all have different learning curves and that nothing -- NOTHING -- replaces time spent at the easel. You will not get better from wishing.  There's no guarantee that your next painting will be better than your last. Chances are pretty excellent, though, given the right attitude -- opening yourself up to discovery -- that your thousandth or so work will be far, far, far improved from your fiftieth. You may not ever be fully satisfied -- but you can and will love lots of your own work -- and allow others to share in the joy of what you alone create.

A Favorite Purchased
"Honey Bunny," oil, 24"h x 18," ©Jill Banks 2012 hopped away.
"Honey Bunny" went home with a very happy collector today.

There will be at least a few sighs over that news out there.

"Honey Bunny" was painted during one of my Still Life class demos and beyond -- while I and students saw this bunny come to life on canvas. It was chosen as one of only 60 pieces nationwide honored to be part of the American Women Artists Annual Juried Exhibition held in Tubac, Arizona in November 2012. It also was recently chosen as a finalist in the Richeson75 Still Life and Florals Online Competition that will go live on March 7, 2014.

"Here and There" Is UP!

Part of the "Here and There" Exhibit in the Katie's Coffee/Snuggery Portion of the Old Brogue
Randy and I had lunch today at the Old Brogue Irish Pub in Great Falls, VA ... so we'd be ready to hang my "Here and There" show in the Katie's Coffee/Snuggery side of this phenomenally busy restaurant. We were looking for a lull in patrons preferring not to bop anyone on the head during the changeover (studiomates Jennifer Duncan and Cindy Grisdela's beautiful two-person exhibit had to come down before mine could go up). The place was packed.

But eventually it did quiet down and up went nine paintings.

From today through February 28, I hope you'll take a look. Or many.

There you'll see:
"Irish Pub," "Corner Couple," "Ice Cold Lemonade," "Jardin de Montmartre," "The Snuggery," and "Montmartre Shadows" shown above.

Left: "Main Street USA" and Right: "Cafe Break"
This corner is a favorite spot ... depicted in "Colleen's Boys" and "Two for Tea."

And, finally ... I know this photo isn't great but the last painting hung is "The Kitchen Caper."

"The Kitchen Caper"

Okay. That was an understatement.

If you can't view "Here and There" in person, have a look online at my web site. Click on the thumbnails for more info and an enlarged view of each.

Not all pieces brought found a spot on the wall -- but more can be seen at the Artists' Atelier, 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls -- open Wednesdays and Saturdays, noon to 4pm.
