Farm Day Warm-Up

"Out Standing In the Field," oil, 6"h x 6"w, ©Jill Banks 2013
Perfect Fall weather somehow steered my car to Kidwell Farm (part of Frying Pan Park in Herndon, VA) after finishing teaching Still Life class today.  Some of the still life setups were calling ... but they lost out to cows and sheep. (Sheep are in progress -- shown below.)

This is a really neat little painting hidden pretty well by a shaky camera operator.

Tomorrow I'll be returning to Kidwell with my Plein Air class. Bet they'll have fun.

This sheep is getting a friend. Just imagine that sepia blob turning sheeplike.
I've been preparing for my Portrait Painting Workshop taking place this Friday through Sunday, November 1 to 3 at the Great Falls School of Art.  If you're interested in joining what promises to be a great three days, email me. More information is available on my web site, www.JillBanks.com classes page.

This Wednesday, October 30 and Saturday, November 2 are the last two open days at the Atelier to see the Studio Tour exhibit.  With some repairs coming up, we will be taking a lot of the work out on Sunday.  So, stop in this Wednesday and/or Saturday, the Artists' Atelier, 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls, VA from noon to 4pm.

"Green Tractor" Revisited

"Green Tractor," oil on Centurion linen-lined panel, 16"h x 12"w, ©Jill Banks 2013
Today I returned to a painting created en plein air in Easton.  Even though it was one of my most successful pieces painted outdoors to date, there were still a few things I wanted to do to "improve" it.  Knowing full well that it's almost impossible to make a piece better without losing the freshness captured on site -- I braved the attempt -- figuring if it didn't work out, I'd erase the day's efforts with Gamsol. (The tractor anatomy needed tweaking.)

Odds were defied. It turned out just as I hoped. No Gamsol needed.

"Green Tractor" has been tugging on my attention for a couple of months.  With so many different shows all in a row to prepare for -- it had to wait.

Coming up a week from Friday, I'll be teaching a three-day portrait painting workshop through the Great Falls School of Art.  There's still a spot left for the November 1-3 workshop, held 9:30am to 4:30pm each day. See more info on the classes page of my website ... with a link to register online. Tell me if you do.  Thanks!

Tomorrow night is the Awards dinner and reception at the National Arts Club in New York City for the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club's 117th Open Exhibition. "Seat by the Window: Montmartre" was awarded the Winnie Borne Sherman Memorial Award ... so I'll be there to happily accept it.

And finished tonight.

Thanks so much to all who helped make this year's Great Falls Studios Art Tour a great success! We enjoyed enthusiastic crowds and all went home to rest our tired feet and voices.

The Artists' Atelier -- the studio I share with 14 other artists at 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls, VA -- is still filled with wonderful art.  Visit us during open hours, Wednesdays and Saturdays, noon to 4pm -- if you missed the tour or want to take another good look.

Thanks again!

Bleary-Eyed View of Studio Tour

Part of my studio set up for Studio Tour
Perhaps today hits a new high in tired painter land.  But also a new high.

Great day at the Great Falls Studio Tour. If you missed it today, join us tomorrow. I'm one of over 50 artists participating in 33 venues in a free, self-guided tour of artists' workspaces throughout Great Falls, VA. This is truly a not-to-be-missed event -- held once a year -- and always better than ever.

Today, three new collectors headed home with my works ... smiling, for sure.

Others ... inspired to paint.

New Collector: Happily going home with "Corner Seat" -- a favorite
Visit Sunday, October 20, 10am to 5pm. I'm at the Artists' Atelier, 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls, VA with lots of my artist buddies.

It doesn't get better than this.

Lots of fun. Don't miss it.

"Opened Orange" and New News from the Easel

"Opened Orange," oil, 14"h x 11"w, ©Jill Banks 2013
Today was Day 1 of a three-day workshop given by Qiang Huang (pronounced "Chong Wong") -- an oil painter who writes a wonderful and interesting blog. Qiang gave a demo this morning and this afternoon we were making our selections from a communal table of stuff and setting up our own still life to work from.  Plus, we were working in pairs.

My still life partner is Mary Beth Gaiarin, who -- when I started to peel the orange -- mentioned that according to her own independent study, it's only women artists who peel fruit to paint. I'm not sure how scientific or in-depth her analysis goes, but at least I fit the gender profile.

Going, Going, Gone
"La Chien de Grange"
Well, pretty much. "La Chien de Grange" -- my painting of the Giverny barn dog that's charmed her way into many hearts has been officially adopted. The painting of her is still hanging in the Artists' Atelier Gallery for Studio Tour this coming weekend -- so you can visit at 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls, VA from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, October 19 & 20.

Sometimes a painting is loved enough by many people that I wish there were "close cousins" of it to share the joy.  "La Chien" is one of those.  I can think of the man who visited it at the Great Falls Library who came by to visit her daily during my "Serendipity" exhibit. And, the family who fell in love with it at Artfest and showed me the photo of their family dog who closely resembled it.

"La Chien's" new owner loves it LOTS. She's found a great home.

A New News from the Easel went out late last night.  You can read the latest issue -- if it didn't arrive in your mailbox -- archived on my web site. And, if you'd like to subscribe to receive future issues -- go to the website and sign up. I publish it once every month or two -- or whenever there's real news to share.

Main News: Studio Tour is coming up in just a couple of days. Once a year. 50+ artists. 33 venues. Free. Saturday and Sunday, October 19 & 20, 10am-5pm.  See me at the Artists' Atelier, 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls, VA.

Portrait Workshop: November 1 to November 3. See the Classes page on my web site for details and info for online registration.

Mastering the Business of Art Workshop: January 4 & 5. You can register now.

Sunday Portrait Painting Classes: starting mid-January. Still Life Classes will still be offered on Tuesdays (10am to 1pm).

Thanks for reading! Hope to see you soon!

"La Chien de Grange" -- the Dog of Giverny Chosen as a Finalist

For those of you who subscribe to my blog, yesterday's email message was a very abbreviated version of the night's post. Go to jillbanks.blogspot.com to see the finalized post.  (I was racing against the clock -- and the clock won.)

"La Chien de Grange," oil, 30"h x 40"w, ©Jill Banks 2013
Today, I received news -- of the good variety -- that "La Chien de Grange," my painting of the regal barnyard guard dog from Giverny, France was chosen as one of 75 finalists in the Richeson75 Online Bird, Animals and Wildlife Art Competition. Richeson is a manufacturer/distributor of art supplies. The company also runs bi-monthly competitions. Most involve gallery shows but the Bird, Animals and Wildlife Exhibition is only online. After December 6, the exhibit will be viewable on the web -- and if it is like years past, it will be a great showing of some of the best works in the genre of animal art.  I'll let you know when it goes live.

"La Chien de Grange" is currently hanging in the gallery at the Artists' Atelier, the studio I share with 14 other artists at 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls, VA. The painting is there -- ready for the crowds that hopefully include you -- visiting this coming weekend for the 10th Anniversary Great Falls Annual Art Studio Tour that encompasses 50+ artists in 33 venues, Saturday and Sunday, October 19 & 20, 10am to 5pm both days. Come visit! See more of my animal art on my web site in the Animal, Birds and Wildlife Collection (under works).

An Email Newsletter is coming any day. They've just been crowded!!!!

"Jardin De Montmartre" In Progress

"Jardin De Montmartre" work in progress, oil, 24"h x 36"w,©Jill Banks 2013
Between posts, life's been fun and busy -- including a great trip to NYC.

Here's a glimpse of what I've been working on today. (Photo is poor -- but I'm guessing you realize that.) More work to go -- plus a good photo. Hopefully this will make it to my studio wall for this weekend's Studio Tour. This event is free, open to the public and gives a glimpse of our processes, tools, inspiration for over 50 artists in 33 locations throughout Great Falls, VA.

The Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club's 117th Annual Open Exhibition at the National Arts Club
Randy and I took a quick trip to NYC for the Benefit Reception at the National Arts Club. This year, I was invited to be one of the jurors of selection for the annual show -- and that helped it be extra special to view the exhibit of chosen works. It is a fantastic exhibit. Fun to see those I'd only seen onscreen. The awards jurors must have had a heck of a time selecting the winners from so many beautiful pieces. My painting, "Seat by the Window: Montmartre" looked REALLY nice there -- well lit and glowing a bit.  Seeing what great company it was keeping also made me that much more excited about it winning a memorial award.

Me next to "Seat by the Window: Montmartre" on the lower right.
We'll be returning to New York for the awards and closing reception.

I did have a chance to go out and paint -- working on two pieces Saturday morning and afternoon before driving back.  Despite the weathercasters' predictions of rain, it was a simply gorgeous day.

Great Falls Art Studio Tour is this weekend, October 19 & 20, 10am to 5pm.  Visit the Artists' Atelier, where I'll be along with 14 of my studiomates at 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls, VA. Come visit! See www.GreatFallsStudios.com for information on the tour.

Artists' Atelier Gallery Hung for Studio Tour.  Come See!

Wednesdays are a blessing. What's known as hump day in business life, takes on a different meaning surrounded by interesting landscapes to admire and explore for my Wednesday plein air painting class.

I've been thinking about pumpkins. Okay. That's not a true out-of-the-box concept come October. But, when planning this week's location, I wanted a pumpkin patch to figure into the equation somehow. Yesterday, after still life class -- I drove over to Krop's Crops. Perfect.

That's where, accompanied with two troops of preschool hayriders, my class set up to capture mums, old cars, tractors, quaint outbuildings and some pumpkins.

Larry, one of the owners, would make a heck of a portrait subject. He sat at one of the picnic tables waiting for hayrider group #1 -- with the backdrop of the market buildings that get added on and on ... and became someone I just need to reveal on a canvas. Didn't yet.

At Krop's Crops, Great Falls, VA
We were part of the joy of the place today. I returned late this afternoon for a bit and will go back ... but the story was this morning with eight easels spread over the ground, happy kids, pumpkin picking, tractor tackling, and Trina leaving the place laden with gifts from the interior to continue scattering a bit of farm happiness.

So much has been going on lately, my artist "minutes" have fallen grossly behind. Lots of great events improperly covered.

October at the Artists' Atelier Gallery
Salon Style ... Studio Tour
We hung the Studio Tour exhibit at the Artists' Atelier Gallery (more to come in our individual and joint spaces)  ... and I absolutely love this show. It's hung floor to ceiling because I'm in charge of this one, and understated is not in my vocabulary. The gallery is drop-dead beautiful. You have to see it. Studio Tour is Saturday and Sunday, October 19 and 20, 10am - 5pm. We're one of the stops at 1144 Walker Road, Suite G, Great Falls, VA 22066. Come see us. The Atelier is also open Saturdays and Wednesdays, noon to 4pm for regular open hours and on Thursday (tomorrow), October 10 we're holding a Celebrate Great Falls coffee in the am (starting at 9:30am). The space never looks better than Studio Tour weekend ... no matter how hard we try.
